It seems like Chavis really wants LSU to come around so he can stay but they've dug their heels in. If he really wanted to be at A&M, he would be there already. Airing all this to the media is a last ditch effort to get leverage on his LSU deal. unfortunately, there is a limited supply of money and we already pay our coaches a ton. He's not "worth" 1.7 million.
I don't see it that way. A&M has a great offense, but their D stinks, and Sumlin's D has stunk everywhere he has been. For all of his faults, Chavis is a good DC overall, and has done a great job shutting A&M down every time we have faced them. Chavis is not a great fit for LSU as we are not capable of giving him the O he needs to have for his style of play. If we were up 21 going into the second half on a regular basis, teams would be forced to air it out, and Chavis' D would work beautifully to stop them. Unfortunately, that isn't us. Sumlin probably believes that the future is a pass happy spread them out league, and Chavis' scheme is perfect for that mentality. If Sumlin is correct, and the SEC does go that direction, A&M will be sitting very good with Chavis as DC. Plus, if your team is capable of hanging 50 on the other guy without breaking a sweat, you don't have to worry so much about last minute drives losing you the game. When you are a tough minded running team, you have to have a D that is capable of battling in the trenches and stopping the run, and you need a DC who isn't going to stop bringing pressure late when the game is close. Chavis' scheme and player preference doesn't allow for either of those things. being a lighter and smaller D line means we are not capable of getting pressure with regularity without the blitz. This means we get carved up when a remotely competent QB is back there late in the game. Thus, someone who can be a great match elsewhere might not be the best fit for us.
Losing Chief will hurt us, but there comes a time when an AD has to say no. All of these coaches are getting better pay than the professors and administrators where they work. The top ones are getting better pay than 99% of their coaching peers. And every year the top ones get offers from other schools and parley that into a pay raise and an extension. It can't go on forever. I suspect Chavis' agent is playing hardball and LSU had to draw a line.
Most of what you say is true, but it's still an act of desperation, IMO, to offer him $1.7m. There are head coaches out there not making that much. I think Sumlin is enamored with him because we've stymied his high powered O every time we've played them. If he thinks the SEC West is going to be a pass happy spread them out division, then he's sorely mistaken. The traditional powers (Us and Bama) will probably never adopt that style, at least not while their current coaches are there. Then, there's an up and coming Ark. team that is a run first, pro style team. AU is really the only team in the West that's had sustained success running that type of offense.
