During Christmas break we drove up to Kisatchie and stayed overnight in the Kincaid Lake campground. Beautiful area... definitely going back in warmer weather. After loading up the nxt day we headed to Driskill "Mountain" to do the short hike to the highest point in Louisiana. As we were filling in the register at the peak, my 4.5 year old daughter informs us that she has to "poo poo". Long story short, she now holds the state record for Highest Dump.

The Wild Azalea Trail starts at Kincaid and goes through the National Forest to Woolworth. It's pretty good. Do it in the spring when the dogwood and wild azaleas are in bloom in the piney hills. Watch for moccasins in the stream bottoms in the spring, though.

Yeah, its on the list. This past trip was the wife's first time camping in place that's not a beach. The WAT trip will be her first time in the backcountry.

Did you sneak in a meal at Tunk's? Good groceries there.

Yeah, they got a frogs leg on the seafood platter at Tunks. Good stuff. The bar is at dock level. You can tie up and walk right in.

So where can one backpack during the summer without it being ass-hot? Are mountains the only option?

Google Creede, Co. Great place to go, rent a cabin on the Rio Grande River, horse back riding, white water rafting, jeep riding on the divide, July 4th Town Celebration, visit ghost towns, trout fishing. Spent weeks up their, busy the entire time.

You have two options to beat semi-tropical southern heat . . . higher altitude or higher latitude. Either way, you are likely to end up in the mountains if you are seeking wilderness backpacking. That's where the parks and preserves are for the most part. Some of the southern national forests are good backpacking if you go in the spring and fall, avoiding hunting seasons and mid-summer heat,
