Rich liberals. Which seems like a misnomer until you realize that many of these artist hit the big time big bucks by a lucky break and never had to work for a living. I've known quite a few musicians who were just as talented as some of the biggest stars. The difference is that the stars got a lucky break somewhere and the others didn't.

I said that. ASCAP fees ARE the licensing fees that they pay. ASCAP is the organization that collects those fees and distributes them accordingly to the artists.

So let me get this straight, if I own a bar, or a salon or an eatery and I pay Pandora a fee and pump it through the sound system in my bar, I have to pay an additional fee to the artist or this ASCAP organization? I can't see how that could be true.

What if I just turn on the local FM radio and use that? Surely there is no infringement there. This simply cannot be true.

Pretty sure you have to pay the ASCAP fee either way but I don't think it amounts to very much money. I does seem like double jeopardy, though because the FM radio station has to pay the fees and maybe someting like Pandora or Spotify would have to pay a larger fee but I'm not sure.

I'm calling bullshit, I'm going to ask a few of my buddies that own places and see what they say. That is what the radio is for. Now I know that when there is a Pay Per View the bars have to pay an astronomical fee to carry those, like in the 10's of thousands of dollars sometimes due to the volume of patrons that will be able to watch it and that I understand but the freaking radio?

I have seen the ASCAP sticker in lots of bars and restaurants. Whether the owners are actually paying anything or just slapped up the sticker I don't know.

Back when they used to show the non network or ESPN televised games on TigerVision for about $40 I knew a guy who owned a bar. What he would do is he would order the game at his house and then bring the cable box to the bar and hook it up. He was only paying the $40 and he sold a lot of drinks on game nights.

Sneaky, now they have the slingbox. I'm sure the fee can't be all that much but it is still bullshit. Its the freaking radio.

You can do it until you get a cease and desist.

From who? Do you think (insert artist name here) is going to pop into a bar and pitch a fit about their music coming out of the speaker? I highly doubt that. Now these nazis that want to collect a fee for it may take odds but as someone pointed out, the fee has already been paid by whatever media stream is providing it. If it is FM radio then that is free, if it is Pandora or Spotify or the like you have to pay for the subscription so the fee is paid there. Non profit my ass, this ASCAP is a cash grab and if I ever run for office I will make it my #1 priority to squash.
