But they would WIN the war of public opinion around the world. This would be the 1st strike in the real WWIII scenario IMHO. It sure would look like we are all out to attack Arabs and Islam. Iran is trying to goad the US into another infantry/armor invasion of a big country so they can turn it into another guerrilla quagmire that we cannot win. Our mission, should our president be smart enough to recognize it, is make sure any war with Iran is airpower, spacepower, and seapower heavy. Short and extremely violent to take out their military and political infrastructure. If they perist, take out their industrial and social infrasturcture. Then let them sit in the mess of their own making, we don't need to occupy the country of our enemies. We can beat any nation in a conventional war. We can beat any nation in a nuclear war. We lose most of our guerrilla wars. The war on terror must mostly be fought using covert, ruthless and often illegal overseas operations. It is important for the leadership to be able to distinguish between the four.
That won't be supported by most of the dems. Some of them, like Biden, continue to call for talks with Iran and Syria. I have no idea why we would want to negotiate with them and give them anything. Like most countries in that part of the world, they can't be trusted. I suspect we'll continue the UN course and keep political pressure on them until they take some provocative action. Don't think this country has the stomach for more military action without us being attacked first.

I don't think so. It's not 1981 anymore and Iran learned something from that raid. Their weapons program is widely dispersed and contains at least three production facilities buried very deeply underground. It would take a nuclear strike to take them out. Israel won't use their nuclear missiles until they are desparate and it will take more conventional airpower than Israel can deliver at that distance.
Actually, thats a good point. I forgot about them digging halfway to China to build their nukes. Iran is a bit of an oddity. Outside of the nut job sitting in the Presidents office and the radical muslim clerics, Iran is FAR more western thinking than say the Saudi's. They are more progressed as a society than many of their neighbors. Azerdinijab(sp) lost much support in the last election. If we could get rid of him and, even though its a TALL order, the radical clerics, we could have something to build on with Iran which would REALLY help in the region. We cant be dealing with the whack job and clerics though. We cant legitimize that screw ball.
This is why I believe we are using covert assets to strengthen the dissident groups in Iran and there are many. The best way to beat Iran is the way we beat the Soviets. Speak softly and carry a big stick. They are high on the list of countries that could undergo another revolution soon.
Great post! I was thinking about this earlier today and came to the realization that the Liberals would blame Bush for a confrontation with Iran since we are in Iraq and should never have gone there in the first place. In other words its all Bush's fault and his war! No way opposition to this president would ever rally around him!
