This just proves the argument for more federal regulation is a crock of chit. If you have something bad you don't add more bad to it. You find another way. The Feds couldn't swim in a horse trough with a life jacket on..
Yeah, all of that did not occur because of government regulation. That happened because the regulatory agency didn't do their job and as a result, BP did what they wanted. That's an argument for a house cleaning and evaluation of staff, not elimination of the regulatory agency. You want to argue that BP would not have made the same disastrous decisions if they didn't have a regulatory agency to bribe and influence?
Well Big Govt is in bed with BP anyway you slice it. I think maybe a better way is let the Insurers regulate it. It is in their best interest to keep them safe and operating. Just trying to think outside the box here. The Govt isn't the answer to everything.
Good point and maybe that is ok but I'm sure they don't rely solely on self insured and probably have some re-insurance somewhere. Anywho just throwing out ideas.
I would assume they do have some type of re-insurance, but I think the main point rings solid... more crappy regulation and a new name for the regulating entity is not the answer when regulators fail. We need fewer, more effective regulations.
The MMS is made up of people. Some of the people in the MMS are corrupt. You remove them and replace them with different people. This is no different than a business or charity when people have become ineffective. That they receive a check from the Federal Government instead of a private business is not a reason to throw the baby out with the bath water. Taking the position that government oversight is needed over the oil industry to prevent the people who work for these corporations from making poor decisions motivated by greed is not saying that the government is the answer to everything. It's not perfect, but it's definitely better than the alternative. We see what has happened with Government limiting what petrol companies can do. Do we really think that a complete hands-off situation would have prevented this? There s just no logic to that line of thinking. Government and businesses are run by imperfect people. The best we can hope for is to learn from our past and limit mistakes. No one side is going to be right all the time.
For everyone that is pointing fingers saying it's BP's fault, or the Administration's fault, or the EPA, or the DOI... Watch this and realize, it's ALL of their faults. The audio isn't that great in this video.
