why is transocean getting off the hook so easily? It was their rig. Is there some sort of investigation going on as to why the rig exploded? Has there been any talk about that, because i haven't heard any? What if they find out it was some sort of structural damage that caused the explosion?

Explosion was caused by the natural gas which leaked from the hole. Transocean owned the race car. BP drove it into the wall.

i was reading an article that was about a crass airline add that makes light of the oil spill. but then saw this at the end of the article....

Alleged ethical lapses in Lake Charles MMS office targeted | NOLA.com

Just some findings by a senate subcommittee investigating the MMS:

    • MMS allowed BP to run the Deepwater Horizon rig without the "demonstrated ability" to shut off the flow of gas and oil in an emergency.
    • MMS allowed BP to operate without remote shutoff capability in case the drilling rig became disabled.
    • [IMG]The Associated Press archiveThe Minerals Management Service assumed many deepwater exploratory wells were unlikely to have a significant impact on the environment, according to a lawsuit filed by Defenders of Wildlife. The burning Deepwater Horizon oil platform was photographed April 22.
MMS did not have an inspector on the rig to settle the "heated argument between BP, Transocean, and Halliburton officials on how they would stop drilling and plug the well."
    • MMS did not have and did not require the industry to have emergency equipment stationed in the Gulf of Mexico that could respond immediately to an emergency.
    • "And MMS did not, in fact, have a real inspection and compliance program," Feinstein said. "It relied on the expertise and advice of the industry on how and how much they should be inspected."

Here's a link to an article on the sand berm project that addresses a lot of the points we both made in our posts. There's a great graphic which shows the difference between the berms and the Islands that's worth a look.

Louisiana officials urge feds to let dredging continue on berm to fight Gulf oil spill | NOLA.com

"Get out of the way; move this bureaucracy out of the way," Jindal said after a helicopter tour of nearly a mile of the newly created sand berm near the Chandeleur chain, which has been withering away after a succession of hurricanes in the past decade.

Jindal said the state has agreed to move the dredges a mile farther offshore, as requested, but doesn't understand why dredging can't continue while the pipe is being laid to the new borrow site. Pointing to a succession of photographs of the withering Chandeleur Island chain, he questioned why the federal government is delaying work in a time of need.
"We've been losing 300 feet every year off these islands. Where has the federal government been?" Jindal asked. "They haven't spent a dollar to protect these islands. We haven't heard from them before today about any concern about these islands or this area. All of a sudden now that we're building new land to protect our coast, they're worried about a hypothetical consequence?"

Unfortunately, both the berm project and the moratorium on drilling have become pi$$ing contests with the administration. I'm beginning to smell "agenda" in all this.
