I saw a commercial last night introducing an American as being in charge of claims. He is also from La. I can understand wanting the assignment, but I am not sure I would have put my face on tv. Pretty brave, imo.

Saw an interview with him. He says that he volunteered himself for the assignment. Brave indeed.

I went into clear water today and noticed all of the oil from the skimmers was sinking upon contact. That was nice to find out. Unfortunately I found out another boat also noticed noticed this...hopefully this isnt happening in Louisiana.

As BP and the government have plotted ways to shut down the renegade oil well in the Gulf of Mexico or contain its spewing oil over the past two months, their options have been limited by concerns about the potential for blowout in the underground portion of the well.

In a well of questionable design with a questionable cement job that's gone through a major explosion, too much pressure on the well, could trigger a rupture, sending oil pushing through fissures in the rock of the ocean floor and bubbling up through the seabed, where it can't be contained.

That's why BP abruptly stopped the "top kill" efforts to seal the well May 28 after the company previously had said the procedure would continue for a few more days. It's also why the company is continuing with efforts to contain the oil flowing out of the well rather than seal the well outright by adding another blowout preventer on top of the malfunctioning one. It's also one reason why the containment cap that's currently capturing oil has vents in the side that allow pressure to escape.

U.S. Coast Guard Admiral Thad Allen acknowledged as much at a briefing Thursday.

"One thing that nobody knows is the condition of the well bore .. . We don't know if the well bore has been compromised or not. One of the reasons we did not continue with top kill at higher pressures, there was a concern that if we increased the pressure too hard it might do damage to the casings and the well bore. What we didn't want was open communication of any oil from the reservoir outside the well bore that might get into the formation and work its way to the sub sea floor and then result in uncontrolled discharge at that point. That has not happened, and that's the reason they're taking such precautions and did not proceed any further with the top kill," Allen said.

"We don't know exactly the condition of the well bore .. .That's the reason we didn't go . . . to excessive pressures on the top kill and decided that we'd deal with containment and then go for the final relief well."

The scenario of oil gushing through the sea floor is considered unlikely, but not implausible. The integrity of the well has become a major topic of discussion among engineers and geologists.

"Everybody's worried about all of this. That's all people are talking about," said Don Van Nieuwenhuise, director of geoscience programs at University of Houston. He said the things that BP has being doing to try to stop the oil or gain control of it have been tantamount to repeatedly hitting the well with a hammer and sending shock waves down the pipe. "I don't think people realize how delicate it is."

"There is a very high level of concern for the integrity of the well," said Bob Bea, the University of California Berkeley engineering professor known to New Orleanians for investigating the levee failures after Katrina, who now has organized the Deepwater Horizon Study Group. Bea and other engineers say that BP hasn't released enough information publicly for people outside the company to evaluate the situation.

Florida Senator Bill Nelson also expressed concern. The Democrat sent BP a letter asking for information and documents relating to any breaks in the well casing beneath the sea floor, any monitoring that BP is doing of the structural integrity of the well, any monitoring of the nearby sea floor for oil leaks, and whether any oil or gas has escaped beyond the boundaries of the casing.

BP spokesman Toby Odone said Friday his company can shed little light on the subject. "We don't know" anything about the condition of the underground portion of the well, Odone said. "We don't know whether the casing inside the well is damaged."

A whistleblower filed a lawsuit today to force the federal government to halt operations at another massive BP oil platform in the Gulf of Mexico, alleging that BP never reviewed critical engineering designs for the operation and is therefore risking another catastrophic accident that could "dwarf" the company's Deepwater Horizon spill.

The allegations about BP's Atlantis platform were first made last year, but they were laid out in fresh detail in the lawsuit filed in U.S. District Court in Houston against Interior Secretary Ken Salazar and the Minerals and Management Service, the agency responsible for regulating offshore drilling in the Gulf.

The whistleblower is Kenneth Abbott, a former project control supervisor contracted by BP who also gave an interview to "60 Minutes" on Sunday night [1]. In a conversation last week with ProPublica, Abbott alleged that BP failed to review thousands of final design documents for systems and equipment on the Atlantis platform -- meaning BP management never confirmed the systems were built as they were intended – and didn't properly file the documentation that functions as an instruction manual for rig workers to shut down operations in the case of a blowout or other emergency.

Abbott alleges that when he warned BP about the dangers presented by the missing documentation the company ignored his concerns and instead emphasized saving money.

"There were hundreds, if not thousands, of drawings that hadn't been approved and to send drawings (to the rig) that hadn't been approved could result in catastrophic operator errors," Abbott told ProPublica. "They turned their eye away from their responsibility to make sure the overall design works. Instead they are having bits and pieces fabricated and they are just hoping that these contractors who make all these separate pieces can pull it together and make it safe. The truth is these contractors see a piece of the puzzle; they don't see the whole thing."

BP did not respond to a request for comment from ProPublica, but has previously addressed Abbott's concerns in a January letter to congressional investigators stating that the allegations are unfounded and that the Atlantis platform had final documentation in place before it began operating.

According to an e-mail sent to Abbott by BP's ombudsman's office, an independent group employed by the company to address internal complaints, BP had not complied with its own rules governing how and where the documentation should be kept but had not necessarily violated any regulations for drilling. The e-mail does not address the specifics raised in the lawsuit.

A spokesperson for the Department of the Interior said the agency would not comment on pending litigation.

Congress and the Minerals and Management Service have been investigating Abbott's concerns since last year, when he and Food and Water Watch, an environmental organization based in Washington, D.C., first filed the complaints. But according to both Abbott and FWW, little has been done. After the Deepwater Horizon Gulf spill underscored their concerns, they decided to jointly file the lawsuit. Abbott was laid off shortly after he raised the concerns to BP management.

I'm glad to hear people like Drew Brees mentioning not only the spill but raising the issue of coastal erosion. We need to build our protection back while cleaning up this mess.

The celebrities who tick me off are the ones who fly in a private jet...make their little personal theory comments about "man-made" global warming...and then jump back on their jet and fly off to another event.

It really gripes my ass to watch all these bleeding heart liberals talk about "carbon footprints" when they're the biggest hypocrites on the planet. The party of hyprocisy is currently in control and isn't getting the job done.

Obama spill panel big on policy, not engineering - Yahoo! News

This administration has no intent on fixing the situation in the gulf or doing what they are suppose to do according to the oil act of 94.
Their reactions to this disaster were worse than Katrina.
They only want to push their agenda no matter the cost, the worse the disaster the better for this administrations policies!
This administration wants class warfare, they want people to hate CEO's, public sector while people like Tom Daschle get rich in Washington DC and when they aren't in office any more they become lobbyists.

How many favors did Senators and congressman owe Daschle because of his position in Congress over the years?
How much money, favors and corruption is involved here?
Yet most people ignore it and attack the private sector because they are programmed to by Obama and the media?

I'm not real happy with the Republicans but they are a much better lessor of two evils then these socialists.
Like I have said we need political, government reform before anything else, end of story!

Went fishing today.

Saw this.

I'm just sick to my stomach over this oil spill. I don't even like to talk about it which is why I don't post on here much.

I pray to God that somehow we can stop the oil flow and clean this mess up and somehow mitigate any further damage.
