Re: Oil Rig explosion/Gulf Oil Spill don't know. problem is, there is a whole lot more bayous and lakes then there is water. the pic I posted is from before Gustav for sure, and possibly before Katrina/Rita. a lot of that land is no longer there. I'll do the best I can to edit the pic to show how far gone it is (I don't have photoshop, and suck at editing).
Re: Oil Rig explosion/Gulf Oil Spill This may sound like a dumb question, but are they working 24/7 on the relief well? August is just too long to wait. It's heartbreaking and infuriating all at the same time.
Re: Oil Rig explosion/Gulf Oil Spill here is that map zoomed in on the are I went yesterday today, it looks more like this I've fished this are my entire life. there are pics of me still in diapers going out with my dad. since Gustav, I still have to stop sometimes to try to remember where the bayou was. there is a stretch of about 100-150 yards where the entire left bank (on way down) is gone. just a wide open bay.
Re: Oil Rig explosion/Gulf Oil Spill I am fairly certain it's a 24/7 task. The first relief well was started on Sunday, May 2. The second on Monday, May 17. They're drilling at a rate of about 30 feet per hour. This timeline is very helpful: Ongoing response timeline
Re: Oil Rig explosion/Gulf Oil Spill How far do they have to go if it is 30'/hr? From now til August 1 at that rate, they could drill 47,520 ft. Are they that far away? Edit: from May 2 til Aug 1, 3 months, that would yield 64,800'. I know they have a certain amount of time for completion stuff, but that still seems like a really big number.
Re: Oil Rig explosion/Gulf Oil Spill will someone please remember to thoroughly inspect the blow out preventers on the relief wells?
Re: Oil Rig explosion/Gulf Oil Spill Well, completing the well is not just drilling. 16,000 feet SubSeaIQ - Offshore Field Development Projects
Re: Oil Rig explosion/Gulf Oil Spill I'm fairly certain they aren't drilling 24/7. There are a lot of other activities that have to be accomplished in addition to actually drilling down the hole. I know someone in the industry and I'll see if I can get a ball park figure per 24 hour period that is devoted to drilling.
Re: Oil Rig explosion/Gulf Oil Spill so at 30'/hr, they should be able to get 16k by today (22 days). It will take another 2 months to do the rest of the stuff, or are they just blowing smoke up our butts once again? I don't know much about the drilling process, so I am being serious when I ask this.
Re: Oil Rig explosion/Gulf Oil Spill unfortunatley, not all of them are. we slowed down quite a bit since the spill. a lot of your big oilfield companies have contracts with different suppliers. BP has one with a rather large national chain. their Houma location has been ridiculously busy since the spill. over the weekend, I talked to a guy who works in their warehouse. he went from 45-55 hours per week pre-spill, to 16 hour days during the week, and sometimes 18-20 hour days on weekend (when there is a smaller crew). they wrap trucks around their yard during the busier parts of the day. ungodly amounts of OT for the hourly employees. unfortunately, that ain't us. not that it would matter, because as a salaried employee, my nights/weekends are free labor for the company.
