I've been supportive of BP and the industry in their efforts to get the spill under control. Up until now. The limey bastards have crossed the line with their apparent F*#k you, I'll get around to it, indifferent attitude. :cuss:

More and more stories about sick fishermen are beginning to surface after the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.

The fishermen are working out in the Gulf -- many of them all day, every day -- to clean up the spill. They said they blame their ailments on the chemicals that BP is using.

One fisherman said he felt like he was going to die over the weekend.

"I've been coughing up stuff," Gary Burris said. "Your lungs fill up."

My favorite part of this weeks news is when the EPA told BP to either find another, less toxic alternative within 24 hours or provide data on why there was not a less toxic alternative.

BP declined to comply.

They have closed most of Barataria as a precaution, but oil hasn't reached the upper bay yet. It's just getting across the gaps in the barrier islands so far. Once its out of those longshore Gulf currents, its a matter of what wind and tides can do to move it north. An awful lot is going to depend on the weather.

Unfortunately sheens of oil that were visible late afternoon yesterday in northern parts of the Bay. Most of these closures are called precautionary. It's just a best guess of where the oil may be or may end up. Lots of these precautionary closures include areas that do indeed already have oil there.

about a week ago i saw a news clip and read an article that in the british press the bp ceo made a statement about how big the gulf was and how little oil it was in comparison to that, in an effort to down play the disaster. that is what set me off.

If the winds from the south keep up, thick oil will eventually move up, too. And the forecast is . . . southerly winds.

In fact, the consensus building among scientists and oil spill experts this week was that BP's mistake likely will never result in a black wave soaking miles of coast in thick layers of black oil. Instead, Louisiana is probably in for a years-long war of mostly small skirmishes against random, low-volume oilings of coastal marshes and beaches.

"I think we're looking at many months of intense activity, but then years of follow-up work," said Robert Barham, secretary of the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries.

"I've been told by the ocean experts this stuff could hang out there on the bottom of the Gulf for more than 100 years. And as long as it's out there, it can come ashore.

"We might not see big black waves, but we may be seeing a smaller, but serious problem, for years and years to come."

Oil company BP used a cheaper, quicker but potentially less dependable method to complete the drilling of the Deepwater Horizon well, according to several experts and documents obtained by the Orlando Sentinel.

"There are clear alternatives to the methods BP used that most engineers in the drilling business would consider much more reliable and safer," said F.E. Beck, a petroleum-engineering professor at Texas A&M University who testified recently before a U.S. Senate committee investigating BP's blown-out well in the Gulf of Mexico.

The BP well "is not a design we would use," said one veteran deep-water engineer, who would comment only if not identified because of his high-profile company's prohibition on speaking publicly about the April 20 explosion aboard the Deepwater Horizon or the oil spill that started when the drilling rig sank two days later.

He estimated that the liner design, used nearly all the time by his company, is more reliable and safer than a casing design by a factor of "tenfold."

But that engineer and several others said that, had BP used a liner and casing, it would have taken nearly a week longer for the company to finish the well — with rig costs running at $533,000 a day and additional personnel and equipment costs that might have run the tab up to $1 million daily.

BP PLC spokesman Toby Odone in Houston said the London-based company chooses between the casing and liner methods on a "well-by-well basis" and that the casing-only method is "not uncommon."

The Coast Guard is out there and has been all along. The rig is in International waters (over 12 miles from shore), as far as any country having the right to sail there. But it is within the 200-mile US Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) which means any fishing, mining, other economic exploitation must comply with US regulations and leasing.
