It's the first step to remove guns from homes. And while the media continues to get up in arms over what the Republicans are "doing" to DHS, they completely miss the fact that Dems are almost giddy about it all because for them it's some sort of post-election moral "victory". Forget about what it means for the people needing paychecks, just win baby.
Same old "cry wolf" that comes out opposing any sort of gun control. Neither Obama, the Senate, nor the House has ever suggested that guns be removed from homes. It's just not true. It's never going to happen in this country and you know it. The round in question is a steel-tipped round with a tungsten or copper alloy core that will penetrate body armor. There is really no legitimate sporting need for armor-piercing bullets, but this round has been excepted because it is a standard military round and surplus ammo is widely available for a reasonable price, making it an affordable practice round. There was never an attempt to ban all 5.56mm ammunition. The issue is that some manufacturers are now making handguns in 5.56 caliber that fire this round. Their only legitimate use is to get around handgun laws. All armor-piercing bullets for handguns have been banned for many years, for obvious reasons. Nobody wants to see cops dying from use of such weapons and ammo. And most people don't want cheap ammo to go away. It would seem like some reasonable compromise can be had here if neither side become intractable.
There is no way in hell a republican will win the presidency unless people are stripped of the right to vote.
@red55 have you seen the difference in destruction in a 5.56 round vs a 45, 308, or other common rounds? Of those 3, the 5.56 is the least of anyone's worries. Further, how many shootings have occurred with the 5.56? Compared to hand guns?
Yep. "A few things to take note of is that the classification as “armor piercing” is for bullets only, not the complete cartridge. Despite the mention of handgun caliber above, you can take that to mean that it’s a round that has been made as a handgun caliber at some point. The bullet (projectile) must also have a core made entirely out of the metals listed above, or be a full jacketed bullet with a jacket weighing more than 25% of its overall weight. This means that the SS109/M855 bullets wouldn’t be covered, as their cores are partly steel, and partly lead. Lead isn’t listed in the metals above. Furthermore, as you’ll see in the list below, the ATF has specifically stated that the SS109/M855 bullets are exempted from AP status...... ATF AP Classified Rounds All KTW, ARCANE, and THV ammo Czech made 9mm Para. with steel core German made 9mm Para. with steel core MSC .25 ACP with brass bullet BLACK STEEL armor and metal piercing ammunition 7.62mm NATO AP and SLAP PMC ULTRAMAG with brass bullet (not copper) OMNISHOCK .38 Special with steel core 7.62×39 ammo with steel core bullets ATF Exempted Rounds 5.56 SS109 and M855 NATO rounds, with steel penetrator tip. .30-06 M2 AP ammo" http://www.itstactical.com/warcom/a...and-why-green-tip-m855-is-not-armor-piercing/
You miss the point. It is a rifle round and now pistols are being made to fire it. You miss the point again. 5.56mm handguns are the issue. Shootings have occurred with every caliber, but the preferred weapon of mass shootings has been the assault rifle. See Sandy Hook, Colorado Theater, etc.[/USER]
Why is it an issue exactly? Plenty of handgun rounds are more devastating. Plenty. Again, mass shootings are the least of worries if your end result is safety. Far more die by hand guns than any. In fact, More people die from Knives than Rifles. More people die from fists and feet than rifles. So again, what is the issue exactly?
