I’m seeing/hearing more and more speculation along these lines. Nixon cut and ran when the going got tough, and this seems a more likely scenario than Trump waking up Nov 4th to a brutal shellacking. Of course Pence is, to quote BM1 Zimmer, "Not all that shit hot." If Trump hangs around until January 20th, do you think he will even go to the inauguration of Biden? I don’t see him choosing to do that.

We'll see how it goes. Four months is an eternity in politics. That said, I believe Trump has a host of factors working against him and given how big those issues are (Covid-19, Unemployment, Economy, BLM, etc.) it will be very difficult for him to overcome them in that time frame, especially when you consider how poorly he has responded to all of these, at least as it pertains to the clear majority of Americans. I do wonder how that would work if he did drop out. Would Pence assume the nomination or would the Republicans try to have a convention to decide on their candidate? Anyone know?
Trump is the only thing saving us from real civil unrest. He is your necessary evil. He is the devil you know.
what have now is wanna be commies trying to stage sit ins, break windows, and dismantle the establishment. Move the fulcrum further left, embolden cancel culture mentality, make everyday citizens fear for their families and their way of life as it has been for generations...that is where the real shit begins to happen. You can't break down a society peacefully. And look at how Maga's, right wingers, conservatives, constitutionalists, or what ever you want to call them...look at how the geared up for simply sheltering in place protests. LOL. It doesn't take real injustice to get that mob lit. Biden is a place holder for the up and coming socialists. That is what I believe.
Actually my point was neither supportive or against the president. This was much more a comment on the changes wrought to our political system by the weakening of the political parties. As it stated Trump, Biden, Bernie Sanders, Pocahontas and most of those running the past few terms would have never made it to the first primary even in 2000. Even Obama would have been blocked from serious contention. We’ve seen a continued loss of quality in leadership in both parties. The democrats have been taken over by socialists and the republicans but right wing ideologues. The country is suffering for that. As to bing for or against the idea of him not seeking re-election I don’t think it matters. Either way AS THINGS STAND NOW he and the republicans are facing a historic drubbing in November.
