Exactly! The Bible should not be taken literally. Inherent contradiction. I am not an atheist, I'm an agnostic. But you are partially correct, atheists and fundamentalists are alike in their intolerence of contrary views.
There is someone going around giving rep (mostly red) with odd comments to people. The comments have nothing to do the the topic. The guy gives me red almost every day with various similar non-sequitors, so he must be posting tons of rep to others for the system to allow it. Anonymous reputation is for the birds, if you ask me. I hope Brett's experiment doesn't last much longer. Reputation means nothing if you don't stand behind it. These goons who hide and neg-rep people with random comments and insults abuse the system. This krap didn't happen when rep was tagged with your moniker.
I don't think he'll turn it back on, because all that anonymous red will suddenly have a name attached to it, and that person will have to pay dearly. JMO
I might have been a little hard on catholics last night. Whatever. I was in a bad mood. Agree to disagree. What bothers me is "Mans" constant overwhelming desire to be able to explain everything. We, as a group, seem to think that if we can't explain it using our scientific terms and laws then there is no way it happened. To all of you who cherry pick the Bible...Do you believe that Christ died on the cross, was buried, and three days later lived again? Do you believe that the blind were made to see, that the dead lived again, that a few loafs of bread and a couple of fish fed thousands, that the sick were healed, that the red sea was parted, that two cities were destroyed by God for their sins,.......I could go on for hours. The point is, how do you decide what is fiction, and what is factual? I believe it is wrong to think that we can understand all of the things of God. That sounds a lot like putting ourselves on the same level as God. Isn't that what satan tempted Eve with in the garden? Knowledge.
I think the number of believers who view the Bible as mostly a collection of folk tales are minimal. Unfortunately, the loudest and most persistent voice on this topic is one of a very loud and persistent unbeliever.
Funny coming from a religious guy because you have just pegged the precise reason why religion exists. Ancient Man: What is that bright circle in the sky? Religious Ancient Man: Why, that's God! Modern Man: What is the point of our existance? How did we get here? What happens when we die? Religious Modern Man: Why, that's God!
That is one of the main reasons I believe in a strong central magesterium that is guided by the Holy Spirit for interpretation of the Bible. Private interpretation leads to all kinds of quarrel and error. Let us all rely on the infallible Church left to us by Jesus Christ and guided by the Holy Spirit to discern meaning and teach us.
Nothing made up of men is infallible. Especially the Catholic Church. Remember the Spanish Inquisition? Nobody expects the Spanish Inquisition!
