Riffs: Ziggy Stardust - David Bowie (Mick Ronson was a genius RIP) Gimme Shelter - Stones (Quite possibly one of the most powerfully mesmerizing intros ever to a rock'n'roll song) Black Dog - Zeppelin (Supposedly after they wrote this riff Page and John Paul Jones would fall down laughing every time they played the riff) Revolution - The Bea'uls (Blew my ears out with this when I was 11 years old) Solos: Starship Trooper - Yes - live off Yessongs (Steve Howe plays one of the greatest live guitar solos EVER on this after Chris Squire's bass solo and Rick Wakeman's synth solo) Don't Do It - The Band - live off Rock Of Ages (Robbie Robertson plays like a banshee on this. Screamin'.) Peace Frog - The Doors (Robby Krieger provides 13 seconds of sheer bliss) Gimme some time, I'll think of some more. Lots of other great songs and riffs already above.
Nice try, but not the original live LP version. BTW that original LP was taken from a week's worth of shows at a fabled Bay Area music venue, Winterland. It was torn down in '78, a year before I arrived here. :bncry: Thank God we've still got The Fillmore.
The fact no one has mentioned Ted Nugent - Stranglehold. That is one of the greatest guitar riffs ever. I would toss in the beginning of Great White Buffalo as well.
I would put Stranglehold in the top 5 with 1. Voodoo Child - Hendrix 2. Stanglehold - Nuge 3. Falling off the edge of the world - Black Sabbath (Tony Iommi (spelling is wrong i think) 4. Aint talking about Love - Van Halen 5. Over the hills and far away - Jimmy Page (my personal favorites) although Queensryche is my favorite band and think everything they do is fantastic.
