we are 4-1 in home super regionals under Mainieri (UC Irvine beat us 5-11 in Game 1 of the 2008 Super Regional, and none of those five Super Regional games in 2008-2009 under Mainieri were played during the day) since 2000, the sample size is probably two small to determine anything, but... we are 2-3 in Super Regionals that start between 11am-2pm (2-0 in the Box, beating 2003 Baylor in 11:30 and 1:30 games) 11:30 a.m. W, 6-5 -- Baylor, 2003 12:30 p.m L, 4-9 -- Tulane, 2001 (@Zephyr Field in Metairie) L, 1-7 -- Tulane, 2001 (@Zephyr Field in Metairie) (also note that when LSU got eliminated by 2-seed Rice in the 2005 Baton Rouge Regional, the game was at 12:30 p.m.) 1:00 p.m. (LSU lost to VCU 7-10 in the 2001 Baton Rouge Regional at 1:00 p.m.) 1:30 p.m. W, 20-5 -- Baylor, 2003 2:00 p.m. L, 0-3 -- @Rice, 2002 while we are 5-2 in Super Regionals that start at 6pm or later (4-1 at the Box) 6:00 p.m. W, 12-9 -- Rice, 2009 W, 21-7 -- UC Irvine, 2008 W, 11-8 -- Texas A&M, 2004 L, 1-4 -- Baylor, 2003 6:30 W, 4-3 (13) -- Tulane, 2001 (@Zephyr Field in Metairie) 7:00 p.m. W, 8-2 -- UCLA, 2000 L, 0-6 -- @Rice, 2002
You damn right it sucks and, while I'm not generally a conspiracy theorist, I believe this was done on purpose. After years of covering SEC football, they KNOW the culture down here is that we prefer night games. And they know that, traditionally, our teams actually perform better at night. They're doing this because they don't want half of the CWS field to be SEC teams, which is a real possibility so they give us the earliest games possible as an edge to Stony Brook. Even if we have record breaking crowds this weekend, they won't actually wake up until the 7th inning. BS move by ESPN or whoever made out the schedule.
Anyone know anything about Stoney Brook, scouting report or such? I looked online a bit and only found the below links that were worth a bit. Seems like their stud is the CF Travis Jankowski, run, hit and field, and a pretty good 1-2 pitcher combo, with Nick Tropeano being the ace (he shut down NC St. last year in the regionals and FAU this year said he was much better than the scouting report said he should be). http://mlbdraftcountdown.wordpress.com/2012/03/27/travis-jankowski-of-stony-brook-2/ http://www.fauowlaccess.com/articles/156/fau-falls-to-stony-brook-in-series-opener.aspx
Certainly the pressure is on LSU more than Stony Brook-they've got nothing to lose. I doubt Stony Brook will be intimidated, but at the same time they haven't played in a a venue like Alex Box. Sucks a fat mans cornhole that the games are so early, though. LSU should have tried some reverse psychology on ESPN and requested early start times. Wouldn't surprise me if they gave LSU such an early start time in hopes of an upset. However, none of that will matter if the Tigers don't take these guys lightly, plays with an intensity worthy of their ranking, and most importantly, the faithful show up in force and prove why Alex Box has earned its reputation. I so wish I could be there. Dang Army!
