I have a nickname for Terry. Saban Defender, someone needs to add this to Saban's wife profile! Where ever Saban is or mentioned there is Terry.
Alright, to be fair I don’t often read Melick’s articles that cover local sports. I read the ones about college football or the SEC in general. Below are a few of his articles from 2004, that’s all I had the patience to look for. Maybe I’m just missing it, but in my opinion he is pretty sharp. I don’t agree with everything, but I think he does his homework and makes good points. 1) While BCS controls cash, forget any playoff 2) Clean SEC in five years is long shot 3) NCAA hearings as big as games 4) SEC to study use of replays in football 5) Another BCS year, another 'tweak' 6) Perhaps Roy Kramer was right all along I don’t know why I even took the trouble to do this. In my opinion he is a good writer. That doesn’t make it fact, but I have respected the guy enough over the years to make it a point to read his articles when I can.
Melick isn't interested in truth, he is just out to pull strings and sell papers. He knows the facts, but honest journalism just isn't as much fun. Below is part of a correspondence that I had with him (emphasis is mine) ------------------------------------------------------------------- Third, I was amused at Dr. Richardson's extreme efforts to defend his athletic department, when the real problem was the academic side. He spent so much effort defending the football program, I decided to have some fun with him by taking recent past events and putting a spin on it to suggest he was afraid of Tuberville. Come on, you know how important football is to Auburn and Alabama and all southern schools. The football coaches are more popular and often more powerful with alumni and trustees than the president. And at Auburn, in particular - what other school was placed on academic probation because the trustees spent too much time meddling in athletics I was trying to have some fun. I did. I'm sorry many Auburn fans took it so personally. I dare say if I'd written something similar about Alabama, you'd have enjoyed it. Regards Ray Melick
gee terry, one could surmise that you're a little peeved that someone else would attempt to tell us all things "'bama". pray tell, just who were these assistants who turned down the Great $atan?
Nick is simply rough on assistant coaches. He is famous in coaching circles for being difficult to work with. But he also gives coaches winning experience, promotional opportunities, and exposure. Some coaches are going to decline to work for him and he will turn over 3 or 4 assistants each year. Half will be cut loose for underperformance by the professional, workaholic Nick, the other half will leave because they are sick of the tyrannical Nick. Bama is just going to have get used to Nick. I told Terry before, there are things they are going to love about Nick--he recruits well, he coaches well, he's demanding (in a good way), his pro-style work ethic is contagious to his team, and he is for damn sure in charge of the football program. There are things they are not going to like about Nick--he's a control freak, he's not a warm person, he's rough on the press, he's arrogant, he's demanding (in a bad way), he can be conniving and dishonest, and he pisses a lot of people off. His experience at LSU has taught him that if he's winning, The People are willing to accept all of his flaws. He won at LSU and LSU gave him everything he asked for in return. At Bama, they gave him everything he asked for up front. The pressure is on Nick to win championships now, and if he does . . . any faults will be forgiven, the BOT and the REC will smile upon him, and the fans will adore him. If he fails to win then all of his failings will be noticed and Nick could be ousted quicker than you can say "Shula". Personally I think Nick will win many games for Bama, but he may not win enough championships in the new competitive SEC to ultimately please the famously idealistic Alabama fan base.
No one turns down Saban the Great. It's all lies, LIES I TELL YOU!!! BamaNation is preparing an attack on the SEC of BIBLICAL PROPORTIONS!!!! We've hired the Great Dr. Evil and he's assembled a staff that strikes fear into the DEVIL HIMSELF....(ooops can't have your staff striking fear in the head coach. Scratch that). He's assembled a staff that strikes fear into 's himself. Reports have it that ears has been put in such a fearful state because of this newly acquired staff that he routinely pisses on himself at the dinner table and in public. His finger tips have developed a cheeto residue on them (due to nervousness over this staff) that causes him to perpetually lick his fingers. Him and Joe Kines are now best buddies. Phat Phil has become so strickened with fear that his genital area releases a smell of donut aroma and he's constantly licking himself. They've had to apply a heavy coating of hot sauce so he'll stop. They're hoping a few weeks of therapy will bring him back to normal. Les Miles got the memo about the newly acquired staff at Bama and was thrown in such a fearful state people saw Miles with his pants pulled down around his knees, ass firmly planted on the ground dragging himself with his arms and hands circling the eye of the tiger at midfield screaming "I want to be the tiger, I want to be the tiger!" This staff that Saban the Great has assembled has really put some folks on notice in the SEC. I hope all gets well by the beginning of the season. I figured the thread was bordering on stupid so I went ahead and took it there. :thumb:
"BamaNation is preparing an attack on the SEC of BIBLICAL PROPORTIONS!!!" 'Bama will very likely go 5-3 this year in SEC conference play. Then, in 2008, there we be several teams peaking. Saban will have to get his guys to play over their heads to win the SEC West title in 2008. If Saban doesn't get 'Bama rolling by 2009, he never will.
I hope you're right. That would be a major improvement from last season. And to think some folks think Bama fans are delusional. :yelwink2: Anybody seen my chips and coke, we're going to see "Coach". :thumb:
