North Louisiana and the Booty's led the push to get him hired...They floated his name and contacted him through a go-between. From there, he and Sexton attempted to work it out.

LSU backed away because of the Kramer situation, and from there, Saban's name came up...

But, to be honest, JDB up at Evangel and the other bigshots in Nawth Looziana were responsible for seeking him out, WITHOUT prior approval from the Chancellor or the AD...

Speaking of almost-LSU-coaches, didn't Steve Spurrier interview for the LSU job when he was at Duke?

Yes but Joe "String Music" Dean chose to hire Mike Archer instead. Thats probably why Visor Boy enjoyed running up the score on LSU whenever he could.

What were Archer's credentials compared to those of Spurrier at that time?

Archer had been the defensive coordinator at LSU under Bill Arnsparger and the players liked him.

Arnsparger campaigned hard for Archer to get the LSU job when he resigned and left to become the AD at Florida. Then who did Arnsparger sign? Spurrier.

Joe Dean was a total nimrod for paying any attention to Arnsparger after he became a Gator. Archer was not ready for the head coach job and he still isn't since he's never been offered one since. Crafty Bill knew this and engineered a scenario where he got the best young coach and LSU got a poor one. Then Joe replaced Archer with a wretched coach followed by an average coach. He never could do a proper football hire.

Bill Arnsparger was the best coach LSU had between Cholly Mac and Nick. But there will never be a street, building, or lamp post named after him on campus. He was not and never will be a LSU guy.

I think that was about the time that Bob Broadhead resigned as AD and Arnsparger wanted the AD job. He might have gotten it but he tried too much of a power play when he tried to get Dale Brown fired.

Red55 or anyone else: The observations about Arnsparger are interesting. Even someone who is capable is not necessarily the best for an organization. It is important that there be a good "fit." Is Saban a good fit or a perfect one? If he is a perfect fit, does that mean that he wouldn't consider leaving?
