What's the book? That's the thing that bugs me. How to make sure the methanol is out, but not waste the good stuff.

There are three plausible reasons that distilling alcohol is still illegal.

The first is that the process of distillation produces high temperatures and pressures that results in flammable by-products.

The second is Red's point, you can blind and/or kill folks without some QC and experience.

The third, and quite possibly the most important, is the loss of tax revenue to the government.

On the last one. Doesn't that hold true for Beer and Wine. Which is legal to make for personal use ? Why is alcohol any different ? All three are taxed

Because of reasons one and two that were giving.....

That and perhaps some historical reasons too.

O.k so it is dangerous to make.
But so is chemistry class, or pouring gas into your lawnmower, or frying a turkey, or making your own buckshot for hunting.

So I understand its dangerous, but that cannot be the reason. People every day do things considerably dangerous.

It cannot be that the government is trying to "Protect" us.
I get the tax part, but that is geared more to bootleggers and moonshiners.

Its an outdated law, needs to be changed. Another example of the government sticking its nose where it doesn't belong in my own home.
If they want to prevent bootlegging, nip joints etc, that I get but some suburbanite in North Texas, making 1 gallon of moonshine should not be illegal

By the way the book I am reading is called
"Modern Moonshine Techniques" by Bill Owens

I just ordered his other book called
    "The Art of distilling whiskey"
I dont want to make just hooch, I want to learn how to make whiskey, Vodka and other spirits.

Again this is more for wasting time and entertainment.

Sure it is. Taxes are the main thing, but distillation a science that most amateurs get wrong, producing methanol poison or whiskey laced with toxins like lead and glycol. Worse, the process requires heat, steam explosions are common, and the product is highly flammable. Many indoor stills have burnt houses down.

Let's not confuse all of those facts with the reason it's illegal. It's illegal because the man doesn't get their cut. Plain and simple.
