Unless they made a fortune another way.

Put it this way, although the case is still opened with the FBI/US Marshalls, there have not been any leads in decades, so there has really been nothing for them to investigate. They could have dismissed the information that the family brought forward to them, but instead, it turned out to be the best lead they'ev ever received in the case and the best evidence to indicate that they're still alive.

If anyone is interested in watching the documentary, it's streaming on the History Channel's website. If you're even remotely interested in the case, it's a fascinating story.

Tell me what you think after you watch it. If you think they got away before, you'll be convinced after seeing what's presented in the show. Of course, skeptics like @red55 will always maintain they drowned unless they're arrested or they find remains elsewhere that they can match DNA to.

Speaking of them being located, if they are found alive, they'd be in their 80s now. Do you think they should be returned to jail or pardoned? Personally, I think they should be allowed to live out the rest of their lives without going back to jail. After all, half a century has past without them being re-arrested, so they would have had to lived a decent life. Plus, the crime that got them sent to jail in the first place - they robbed a bank with a toy gun. Not exactly the crime of the century. The only reason they even got sent to Alcatraz was because they kept escaping from every other jail they were in.

@fanatic if we use their playbook we shouldn't even spend time and money looking for them.

There were two Anglin brothers and no evidence that either of them or Frank Morris drowned.

Ok, as you may be able to tell, I've always been kind of interested in this case on and off since seeing the movie way back when and that interest was re-piqued after seeing the newest documentary the other night. As such, I've been looking around trying to find additional information and came across another compelling piece of evidence that they made it.

At the 27:20 mark of the youtube video in the link below, the field agent for the US Marshall's, who's now in charge of the case, found 2 different, never before seen memos from the FBI that indicate that the raft they crafted specifically for the escape, was found on Angle Island. In addition, one of the memos indicates that there were foot prints leading away from the raft. Furthermore, a car was reported stolen just after daylight the morning of the escape in Marin County, which is right across from Angel Island.

For whatever reason (coverup, etc), the raft was never entered into official evidence and no one knows what happened to it, nor was the information about the stolen car. Also very strange is how/why, these 2 memos have only recently surfaced, so I can understand why there's skepticism. However, the fact remains that both the previous agent in charge of the case, who's now retired, and the current AIC both believe they made it. That right there tells me I need to know.

If they had help I could see them making it. Angel Island would have been the way to go . If they drowned with the currents they would have been pulled out to sea.

But lots of others drowned. Alcatraz deserved its escape proof reputation.

It should tell you nothing except that old men like to tell tales. There is no evidence that the raft was recovered. In fact the memos referenced above indicate that two rafts were found in different parts of the bay and neither were the home made raft used by the convicts. Nothing about footprints at all.
