It wasn't a raft so much as a floatation device, big make shift balloon basically. You saw the movie.

If that part was true then I think they could have made it.

I saw the movie but it was years ago. I would have to see it again to remember everything.

The mythbusters did a segment on it, they made it.

from Alcatraz to the sf side is treacherous and very choppy. Never seen it when it wasn't.

But I think they were supposed to have gone for one of the islands behind Alcatraz. I think it is Angel Island. On a decently calm night I think they could have made it. Family could have met them there with a boat.

Alcatraz is a cool place. And I never would have wanted to be there. It gets cold in sf in the middle of the summer. And Alcatraz is there surrounded by cold water.

Damn cold water, even in the summer.

It's another conspiracy theory. There is absolutely no conclusive evidence that anyone escaped.

Nor any conclusive evidence that they drowned.

There is evidence that many of them drowned. So I remain skeptical of claims otherwise that are based on no evidence.

You might change your mind had you seen the documentary. I know it's tailored to entertain, but even the FBI acknowledges that the evidence the Anglin family turned over is the most substantial lead they've ever had in the case. As previously mentioned, even though the photo wasn't 100% conclusive (nothing is), the FBI forensic examiner concluded that in his opinion, it was them.

I agree with this if they had tried to make it by swimming, but now they're saying that they were towed by the boat that ferried the guards back and forth to the mainland. They definitely had help from someone on the outside. The 'family friend' who came forward to the family in 1992 was a convicted weed smuggler. He was a pilot that flew weed into the US from South America; where the Anglins were said to have a farm in a remote area of Brazil. This is just my theory, but I think the Anglins grew weed on that farm and their friend smuggled into the US. That's how they were able to sustain themselves all these years.

It would be hard to imagine that someone safely in a country with no extradition to the US would not cash in on the obvious fortune to be had by selling that story.
