You state that Oeaux had nothing to do with Burrow coming here. I will take your word for it, but don't really care because he came and the rest is history. I will give Oeaux credit for bringing in Max Johnson, Nussmeier, and Walker (hopefully). Under Miles, we were miserable at bringing in quality QBs (with the possible exception of Mettenberger). QB recruiting, DL, & OL were areas where Oeaux said we had to get better at when he was made permanent HC at the end of the 2016 season. Unfortunately 2 out of 3 didn’t cut it as regressed at OL.
You're right. I actually give O full credit still for 2019. He made the hires of Bill Busch which got us Burrow and he listened to E about Joe Brady and hired him as well as he fought to keep Aranda. O deserves full credit for all those things. He also led that team and motivated them throughout the year and pushed all the right buttons. He's a championship coach. He's also pissed it all away and shown he's abandoned what brought him to the dance entirely. There's a reason he wasn't able to hire two experienced great coordinators. Barry Odom and Marcus Freeman were both home run hires and both turned him down. He ignored Russ Callaway on his own staff to chase trying to sell us on Joe Brady 2.0 but that's absurd. There aren't lots of Sean Payton or Sean McVay or Kyle Shanahan running around. They're rare gems. Trying to hire guys standing next to them doesn't get you them. I honestly don't believe O even knows what the Joe Brady offense is but that's another matter entirely cause this is nothing like it.. I just wanted to provide context that he didn't unearth Joe Burrow. He recruited him and got him here but it was totally Bill Busch. Burrow is what changed this program and got us Max. But we already had Myles who is really good. Les signed highly touted qbs he just didn't develop them and put them in a draconian offense. Heck Etling was still in the league this year and Mett made a team. Talent wasn't often the issue it was the development and usage. Nuss was local kid so we had a strong shot there. There's a lot to credit Burrow for.. he's done what Carson palmer did for USC. Once he won the Heisman he made USC the destination for qbs like Leinart, Barkley, Booty, Sanchez, Cassell, Darnold, Slovis, JT Daniels, and on and on. Even when they're bad they get qbs all because of Carson opened the gates. Joe unlocked the gates for us imo. Just wanted to provide context. Busch was a terrible coach but he was an amazing recruiter and deserves credit for getting us Burrow. O gets credit for listening. Don't think he does much of that now. I don't think he's doing a lot of things these days he did back then. Success affects everyone differently. Some get fat cat syndrome and some can't stop competing like Brees or Brady or Urban or Saban.
No way. He gets top talent every year. Raids Texas for their best yet he gets his ass kicked every year when he gets to the playoffs especially by the SEC. Should O have to go we should shoot higher because the next hire better be right or we are looking at a coaching carousel for years the likes of a Tennessee or South Carolina.
Now now come on. O gets blamed for poor play no matter what position as it should be the buck stops at the head coach. However the buck stops at the head coach for success. Can't have it both ways.
As mentioned earlier, he gets top offensive talent every year and gets beaten by SEC teams because he cant recruit on the defensive side. That could change at LSU. Most elite defensive players don't want to play in the big 12 and getting kids to leave the south (where a lot of great defensive kids come from) to go to Oklahoma is a huge challenge. LSU being known for their defense is a reason elite players want to play here. Also there is a lot of in state talent to pull from and keep home. Riley wins football games. His teams find ways to win, he is one of the best at in game adjustments, that the sign of a good coach on the verge of becoming a great coach. If OU could field a strong defense with depth, there would be very little to no separation between them and Alabama (other than Nick Saban, nobody is Nick Saban).
player development is the most overlooked aspect of our current situation and in looking ahead… starts/ends there
I know I am sounding like a broken record but if we lose to Kentucky I will help to maje sure he doesn't finish the season.
