John Wayne I think he had a football injury to his back, which kept him out. There is a cool story about how he helped the CIA get two KGB agents who were sent to assassinate him.

The Duke didn't need to serve. He killed enough bad guys in the movies.

well he won the battles anyhow in "the Green Beret"

So did the real green berets. Vietnam is an oddity, we won just about every battle but lost the war.
I believe the reason is we could never get enough of the south Vietnamese to stand up for their country. We were outsiders and they saw little difference between Ho Chi Minh and the S Vietnamese leaders.
Likely the same situation in Afghanistan today.
