No butch! even before the panic attack story, I think philter and myself were two of the few on this site against hiring butch davis. please don't tell me davis was an excellent recruiter at Miami. The jury is still out. Miami recruits itself. I am in the process of compiling the same '99-'03 draft choice list for FSU and UF. I have already completed FSU's list which looks very similar in stature to Miami's list. I have a feeling UF may not look as good as the two other florida football powers, but my guess is that it won't be too shabby. The point here is that Florida is going to keep many of its top athletes in the state and they will attend either UF, FSU or Miami. Miami with its warm weather and LA type lifestyle will attract bluechippers regardless of who's coaching down there. Davis' pro experience will def be a plus, but I am not ready to make the statement that so many around here use lso liberally about butch davis' recruiting prowess. we just don't know. butch davis has been the biggest bandwagon candidate to come around since john kerry.

Any coach that would have coached Miami during that time probably would have a similar talent list. Miami is constantly spitting out talent for the pros. I'm not sold on his recruiting either. If you can recruit at a school such as South Carolina, then maybe. Recruiting well at Miami doesn't impress me at all.
Ok, if that's how you feel, what is the difference of recruiting at Miami and that of LSU? It's not like he is going to have to recruit players to play at Ole Miss or somewhere. He has plenty of in state talent and can dip into Texas and FL to name a few. Besides, he had to put Miami back on the map, so he should be given a lot of credit for these kids to even want to start to come back to Miami. Someone had to do it. It was Davis. BTW, Miami has never, ever put THAT much talent into the NFL in that short period of time. You can't act like that happened every year Pre-Davis at Miami. Also, some of his best players werent very highly recruited. Shockey came from JUCO, Vilma was an undersized LB, and Sean Taylor was a HS QB, just to name a few. The guy has a good eye for talent.
I want nothing to do with Butch. He screwed Miami over with his Browns deal and was nothing but trouble with the Browns.
My whole point is that I think LSU can find someone better and proven. His yearly records for his six year run aren't too impressive. So some say he was sanctioned and didn't have the players to work with, but that doesn't change the fact that we don't have much to go on when it comes to evaluating his coaching on the field. He may very well have had more of a winning record had he not been sanctioned, but we'll never know that. So let's just go with a proven winner (record wise). IMO, there are better candidates out there.
Saban wasnt a proven winner, and look where he has us. Butch's winning % at Miami is better than Saban's at MSU if i had to guess. He comes with more credentials than Saban ever had. I'm not saying he is better, but to say we need someone with a high winning % doesnt hold much water, considering LSU's savior didnt win until his last year at MSU.
The difference is, we can now afford to be choosey. When we hired Saban, we were coming off of a 2 win season and had Dinardo as our head coach, anything was a step up from him. Now we are a top 10 program and we don't have to settle, so why should we. Any team in our position would go with a proven coach.
Unflattering article http://www.chron.com/cs/CDA/ssistory.mpl/sports/2921101 A few weeks old, and I posted it previously, but it seemed to go with this thread.
He actually loss all of his real big games(Va Tech/FSU) until his last season. The real answer would probably entail finding out exactly what kind of sanctions he was facing his first 3 years and how many of the players he inherited were kicked off the team.
