There are no trophies for looking good in practice.

You are on the right path.

Mett will get his shot in the Fall he just hasn't been there consistently in the Spring yet. No one really expected him to but he did an outstanding job from the get go and was awarded #2 reps over Lee on multiple occasions this spring.

Actually, I did notice that JJ get rid of the ball faster at times yesterday and his mechanics seem to have improved. He also pulled up and ran faster than usual which will be beneficial in times of need but I don't want him running when he still has an opportunity at throwing it downfield.

The little things are the important things to look for in a vanilla spring game when the Defense pretty much knows what is coming. Mett showed a bunch of little things as well that look very promising. He will get opportunities this year.

JJ had his least productive scrimmage of the sprig yesterday and Mett had close to his best so far based on what I heard from a friend of mine who has been there every practice.

This seems a little too familiar to me...
Last year during Spring practices, all we heard from Miles was that JJ was better. Then he was horrible during the Spring game and we know how the season turned out.

He had a couple of nice passes yesterday but many more bad ones. Where is the guy that played in the Cotton Bowl and why can't he show up in a non contact Spring Game?

I didn't learn anything from the spring game. Everything is dulled down and without QB contact, of course JJ won't look as good. He's never at his best throwing the ball. It's the running game that can make him dangerous. In a spring game, the defense knows they won't be running QB draws. In a game, not knowing the plays can open things up in the passing game.

We will still be a run first team next year despite all the buzz about a pass happy offense IMO. This was Miles's MO last year and won us 11 games.

Preface by saying I didn't read the whole thread. Here's my thoughts...

IMO, the praise/talk coming out of camp overstated the actual situation. I think if you pay more attention to footwork, decisions, other nuances, it was clear that...not only did JJ improve, but even Lee did. If you pay attention to stats, you come away unimpressed...perhaps even suicidal.

Also, if you quit watching at halftime, you're more impressed than if you watched the whole game. (with JJ)

Before I go further, I'll say this. I think Mett is absolutely the only true QB on the team. I think he is heads and shoulders more talented, and more natural a QB compared to either JJ or JL.

But. I have no idea if he is ready to 'start' against Oregon. I think the green jerseys help pocket passers, because they know they can't be hit. I think that same jersey hurts a guy like JJ, because he knows all they have to do is touch him and he's down. Both Mett and JJ suffered sacks that wouldn't have really been sacks...and JJ had several nice runs cut short by someone he's already passed touching his jersey. On one play early, he saw the play was covered, and he threw it out of the EZ. There's one incompletion. But in a real game, he probably scores on that play...because he only had to get past one guy, and he was at about the 6. I think early last year he would've forced that pass. On the play (late drive) where the screen was recognized and covered by the defense, he was smart to know he could NOT pass it, because the OL was already downfield. So he ran for a decent gain. Again, I think early last season, he would've thrown it.

So yeah, if you watch yesterday's spring game or any part of early last season, then watch this spring game, you can see little things JJ has improved upon. But if you thought he was having a coming out party, you're very disappointed.

JL would've looked much better had he simply done like JJ did and thrown the ball away when it wasn't there. But he just can't seem to grasp that...and Eric Reid is better than he is.

Mett? There was definitely evidence he doesn't have the playbook down yet, but hey...it's spring. He's got a laser arm, can thread the needle on quick slants, (which JJ canNOT do), is very decisive, and simply looks the part of a confident QB. My only hope is a fair competition in the fall. But if Oregon was next week, I'd hope Miles would start JJ...knowing the green jersey ain't in play. Fortunately, there's 146 days until we play Oregon.

    The defense is SICK!
