I think John Williams deserves a vote. Great game. He didn't stay at LSU but what, 2 years? Gained too much weight in the NBA, fell out of the game. But at LSU, he was a man among boys. 86 squad.
Remember the game when JW was to inbound the ball under the opponent's basket, with the Tigers holding a slim lead (I think) and a few seconds left on the clock, and he threw the ball the length of the court, out of bounds untouched by anyone. He didn't know that if no player touched it the ball would return to the spot where he inbounded it with possession going to the opponent UNDER THE OPPONENT'S BASKET. Funny, I remember the play but can't remember who the Tigers were playing or how the game came out. Thought Dale was gonna faint.
Dale cannot be the head coach. Remember the comments from Dean Smith and Bob Knight... He gets the spot of head recruiter and head cheerleader, but the man can't coach to save his life.
He's only the most successful coach in LSU history. Too many people around here judge Dale Brown on his last three years, instead of the 20 that came before them.
C -- Shaquille O'Neal QF -- John Williams PF -- Bob Pettit PG -- Chris Jackson WG -- Pete Maravich There are Three Top-50 All-time NBA stars on this team. Not many schools can boast that. Two Hall-of-Famers including a guy who was the all-time leading NBA scorer when he retired 45 years ago and another guy who is still the all-time NCAA scoring champion after 35 years (despite no freshman eligibility or a 3-point shot). And a rare freshman All-American. Second and third Team C -- Greg Cook, Geert Hammink QF -- Rudy Macklin, Stromile Swift PF -- Dewayne Scales, Leonard Mitchell PG -- Ethan Martin, Kenny Higgs WG -- Howard Carter, Randy Livingston Interestingly my second team all played together in 1980 and were probably the best team LSU ever put on the court.
Oh. You're not judging his coaching based upon his record or his success, but upon what some of his enemies in the business have remarked about him. You wouldn't rank Bobby Knight very high as a coach either, I suppose. There are a lot more disparaging remarks going around about him than Dale, you know.
I think we ought to go WAAAYYYY back and add Sparky Wade. He was LSU's first All-American and team captain when LSU won the National Championship by beating Pittsburgh 41-37 in 1935. If I remember right, Harry Rabenhorst was the coach. Todd
