Interesting point made on the AIG bonuses today by a Limbaugh caller. The president has downplayed the earmarks in the stimulus and omnibus bills, saying they were a very small part of the overall packages. OK, if that's the case, why get upset about 450 million in bonuses? That's about a quarter of one percent of the total 160 billion dollars in the AIG package! That sounds like a very small part to me.

Im sorry, and I may be wrong, but I find it very hard to believe that the fall of one company would "put the economy in the tank."

The actual figure is $163 million and it's a valid point. I would prefer that the bonuses not be paid at all, but they have to be. And don't forget what I pointed out earlier: Every AIGFP bonus recipient had his 2009 salary cut to $1, and everyone else had salaries cut from 10 to 30%?

All this money isn't going to AIG because they are nice guys. Experts believe that the ramifications to the world's economy would have been catastrophic.

Come on Sourdough, you know better than that.:yelwink2: We're not talking about driving without car insurance. We're talking about not having builder's risk and flood insurance so a lender won't lend you money. We're talking about not reinsuring company's debt and having the price of everything rise substantially. It is much more expensive to insure a single entity than to insure a group of entities. If everyone is insuring themselves, or single entities, then prices go up. There are a million other factors including insuring financial instruments, mortgages, etc. These are not toxic items to insure, they were just priced incorrectly.

The reason we don't bail out individuals is that it only helps that individual. If we can fix AIG and the banks, the market goes back up, people make some of their money back, and everything is better. Motion and spending stimulate the economy not giving taxpayers $3,500 checks that they can save. And contrary to popular belief, and emails flying around, $787 billion divided by 250 million people is not $300,000 per person. It's about $3,000 per person.

I would love for either one of you to explain AIG's business model or just some of the lines of business they are in right now. And i don't think one company falling will tank the whole economy, but when the economy is on the brink of disaster, it doesn't take much to break the bank.

Its a mute point though, according to the president, tv media and liberals no one can afford to buy anything anyway so there should be no buying and selling of anything so therefore no one needs insurance until Obama saves us all!

Awesome! Obama and Dodd were the two biggest congressional recipients of AIG payouts.

Pretty sure Dodd wrote the language protecting the other payouts to execs.

Do you mean to imply that these guys knew that the bonuses would be paid out before this week? You mean their outrage is not sincere?

    Forfend!
