Great! I have my yearly exam in 2 weeks. I'm not looking forward to questions like that coming from my ob/gyn of the past 15 years. She's never asked me questions like that; it seems like it will awkward.

No it is not. By law, in most cases before the ACA, insurance companies were restricted by law to 17 or 15 of premium going to admin/profit.

It is called the permissible loss ratio.

ACA makes this across the board.

Covering pre existing conditions and having to insure otherwise poor risks are what drive up rates since these more expensive insureds are gonna cost more.

ACA is not healthcare, it is wealth transfer in its purest form.

The answer is healthcare, not insurance with another layer of cost and bureaucrats.

Look in the mirror. Do you view/treat/use your health insurance as you do your property or auto insurance? If the answer is no, you are part of the problem. You are not alone.

What does that last part mean? Do I only use it when I have to?

It was momentarily awkward. I wasn't sure I heard the question accurately so I was like, "Excuse me?" I got an apology and then was told they have to ask those questions. It was my annual exam! Who the hell needs to know that about anybody?

It means that in all likelihood on your car, you pay for maintenance an small repairs, submitting a claim only on major item. Health insurance in this country has morphed into a prepayment plan. You need to define "use it." If you have your insurance pay for doctor visits or routine sicknesses, then you have violated insurance theory, and cost skyrocket, since ther is 20%, more or less tacked on to cost that should not have been submitted in the first place.

OBTW "you" in my above response is everybody, not directed at you.

In theory, the high deductible health plans were gonna fix this. Actuarial lay, large heterogeneous body of insureds would have worked. Unfortunately, as soon as these plans appeared, they were flooded with people with high insurance costs, and as a result, they no longer reflected a cross section, so their rates skyrocket, too.
