this leads me to again ask why debt is bad.

which leads to the answer "because we have to pay for it later". and we can do that one of two ways:

    1. pay higher taxes (very very bad, cripples economy)

    2. get less services from the government (fantastic)

And guess which way politicians will attempt to answer it. There's the reason that debt is bad.

sounds more like a reason politicians and the voters who support them are bad.

Absolutely. It would be ignorant to not consider the nature of politics in the debate of whether debt is bad or not though. To me, this again points to the US having large amounts of debt as being bad.

    we almost agree.

you are agreeing that debt is not inherently bad, it is only bad because politicians will raise taxes to fix it. correct?

and my opinion is that debt is fine as long as politicians do not raise taxes to fix it, which you say is inevitable, but i say it only is because we think it is.

    Correct.

I base my opinion off of history. History has shown that with each passing politician, each passing decade - taxes have risen. I'm not saying that it is inevitable, just that the past predicts it.

well, even more reason for us to like bush, who has not only not raised taxes, he has lowered them. i hope our next president is as commited to lower taxes as bush.

Most politicians lower taxes - yet taxes are continually rising. IMO, lowering taxes is just a way of making people feel better (oh yea, and help the person get elected). They lower one, they raise another.

I have no opinion on the subject... I just wanted this thread to seem less like a private conversation between martin and CParso...
