NORTH ATTLEBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) — State and local police spent hours at the $1.3 million home of NFL tight end Aaron Hernandez of the New England Patriots on Tuesday night as another group of officers searched an industrial park about a mile away where a body was discovered the day before.
Police at the scene and prosecutors would not comment on the actions while Sports Illustrated, citing an unidentified source, reported that Hernandez was not believed to be a suspect in what was being treated as a possible homicide. Police had spoken with Hernandez, the magazine said.
Sports Illustrated reported that the link between Hernandez and the case was a rented Chevrolet Suburban with Rhode Island plates that police had been searching for. The Sun Chronicle of Attleboro, Mass., said the SUV was registered to "Enterprise" and investigators wanted to analyze it for fingerprints.
The Associated Press could not independently confirm the reports.
No cause of death had been released for the body found about 5:30 p.m. Monday.
Hernandez is represented by the Athletes First agency, which said it has no comment "on the Aaron Hernandez situation." The player's mother said by telephone from Connecticut on Tuesday she had no knowledge of a case involving him.
The Patriots drafted Hernandez out of Florida in 2010. Since then, he has combined with Rob Gronkowski to form one of the top tight end duos in the NFL.
On Tuesday night, some police officers stood on the front steps of Hernandez's 5,600-square-foot home and others could be seen inside. Some walked around the driveway and in the garage with flashlights. Before wrapping up their work for the night, one officer took a box out of the massive house.
ABC News reported that two Hernandez friends tried to leave house at the time of the search, but they were stopped by a state police car at the end of driveway. Investigators searched the car the men tried to leave in.
The Sun Chonicle reported that state police issued a bulletin Tuesday night saying they were looking for yet another rental car -- a silver 2013 Chrysler 300 with Rhode Island plates -- in connection with the "North Attleboro homicide." Police said there could be up to four occupants in the vehicle, the newspaper reported.
During the search, the report said, Hernandez received a hand-delivered package from the prominent law firm Ropes and Gray, and the deliveryman told reporters that it was addressed to "Mr. Hernandez himself."
"I am aware of the reports, but I do not anticipate that we will be commenting publicly during an ongoing police investigation," Patriots spokesman Stacey James said.
North Attleborough is south of Boston on the Rhode Island state line, not far from the Patriots' stadium in Foxboro. It is home to several Patriots players. Gronkowski bought the home from former Patriots defensive back Ty Law.
In 38 games, the 6-foot-1, 245-pound Hernandez has 175 receptions for 1,956 yards and 18 touchdowns. He missed 10 games last season with an ankle injury and had shoulder surgery in April, but is expected to be ready for training camp. The Patriots have not said which shoulder was operated on.
Last summer, the Patriots gave Hernandez a five-year contract. It was worth $40 million, according to reports, and came just months after the team locked up Gronkowski, through 2019.
"Aaron's improved a lot," Patriots coach Bill Belichick said at the time. "He's worked hard, he's improved a lot in all phases of the game — the passing game, the running game, protection and his overall versatility. He's doing a good job for us."

This and Gronk getting surgery every 3 days, the two tight-end approach to the forward pass is looking ominous in the northeast.

Could you imagine being a diehard Patriots fan right now? I'm sitting there with my buddy watching all the hype getting us excited for the beginning of Game 6 in Miami, then we get the breaking news on Gronk making him seem like he's the most injury-prone man in history, then they cut to the breaking news making it sound like Hernandez is going to be on death row in the not-too-distance future. I wonder if more people in Patriot Nation went to the ER for heart conditions than normal

THIS NEEDS TO HAPPEN. My dream scenario: Patriots with no Welker, no Gronk, no Hernandez decide to go back to the drawing board and redesign their offense around Tebow at QB, while Tom Brady becomes Tebow's full-time QB coach (could Tom Brady even talk with Tebow the whole game with a headset in Tebow's helmet?). BUT it will be almost just as epic to see Tebow become the Patriot's go-to receiver at TE, as well as their go-to short range weapon at FB and situational QB duty.

Arrest warrant issued per several media outlets in Boston. Obstruction of Justice at this point but I'm sure they want to get him in custody so they can lean on him.

I'm sure this has been discussed but haven't seen much of the national coverage: Saw something about a separate incident recently with Hernandez accidentally shooting someone (a friend?) in the face. Did that factor into the Patriots signing Tebow as an insurance at TE? Then, this latest incident just happened to occur shortly after Tebow's signing?

That gosh darn Tebow always brings a media circus to the teams he plays for.
