well, you see most people don't have cancer so the symbolism thing works to get a dollar out of people who wouldn't normally think of contributing to it. You see, most people aren't going to work thinking about cancer research but it doesnt mean they aren't empathetic. Its a lot more convenient for someone to give a dollar as most people wouldnt think it was worthwhile to go the cancer foundation to donate a buck...they would probably be embarrassed. Plus, it gets morons who want the bracelet(s) who would never donate in the first place to give a dollar or more. So, don't hate something that is popular cuz you think they are trying to be cool. Maybe they feel good about themselves donating and maybe they just trust the brand name APPLE and therefore buy an IPOD.
i agree with everything you are saying. still, it is stupid. people are stupid, and they want their trendy yellow bracelets, so good for them i guess.
instead of being anti-mainstream, be happy more dollars are going to cancer research regardless your hate of being like others. being popular is as hard as is is to be different.
i am not particularly happy more money is going to cancer. i dont care one way or another. i am not even convinced charity is the most effective way to go about the research. what if a charity is making it less profitable for a profit-motive company to develop drugs? maybe it would be better if the money was invested in pharmaceutical companies that are driven by profit and as such might be far more efficient. and i am not anti-mainstream, i just acknowledge that things are pointless when they are. i am just ackowledging that wearing a piece of rubber on your arm is basically meaningless. but hey, if you want to be trendy, be my guest.
anytime something good comes out of a deed, the alternative doesn't lessen it nor does the intention behind it. If some actor donates 100 million to charity on tv as a tax writeoff for publicity, its still a good deed. Doesnt matter if he could have done it privately or to a better charity or funding. Quit criticizing people who's means dont justify your ends. Its more worthwhile than you turning something positive into a negative.
it isnt my job to help people feel good about themselves. if they need a stupid yellow bracelet to make themselves feel like they are helping the cause, good for them. but that doesnt mean i dont know the real reason isnt because they are noble, but because they are trendy or like to pretend care about doing things for humanity. i realize people are like me, and they do not care about these things, but i dont lie to myself about it.
no they arent like you, they are doing something good regardless your assumptions. Im sure many wear it to serve as a reminder to them and others to support such things. just cuz you think its to be trendy doesnt make it so. it makes you feel better to slam them for doing something for a good cause because you dont care about it. always finding a negative is not like everyone else. maybe thats just you.
The money given to organized charities is mostly a waste. Groups like the United Way spend over 75% of the money they get on administrative costs and on more fund raising. I would rather give money to a bum on the street than give it to the United Way. At least that way I know that 100% of my donation is going toward the bum's booze or drug habit and not toward $80,000 for remodeling an executive's office like some of the money given to the United Way for th 9/11 victims was.
exactly. an effective way to help find a cure to cancer might be to invest in a for-profit pharmaceutical research company that stands to make instant billionaires of its entire staff if they find a cure.
