mizzou is one i cannot wrap my mind around. they belong in the big 10 (or whatever that mathematically challenged conf is now). baylor is so pathetic, i think that when it looked last time like the lil dozen was gonna implode, they couldnt find anyone to take them. not even mountain west. they bring NOTHING to the table. i agree that the sec doesnt have to take more than one team right now. they can take one, let all hell break loose, then cherry pick. although i would rather not even add one. though i would not mind an even trade.... atm for arky.
i understand that, but they just do not fit to me. maybe it is because i spent some time (a couple of years) in columbia, missouri, but imo, it is not a good fit. the markets they bring is the only thing. (oh, and no, i did not go to mizzou. tho i did my fair share of partying there.)
This is just speculation on my part of course, but I kind of think we're just treating Mizzou as the backup plan. We negotiate with whatever schools we want, and if we feel like we need to snag a spare school to even out and can't get another without trouble, Mike Slive calls up Mizzou and it's done. As far as I know there aren't any local reports of conversations going on with Mizzou the way there are with Florida State, but as desperate as they were to get out of the Big 12 last year, there don't really need to be.
They would be better fits from a strictly athletic standpoint. But whenever there's something you don't understand the why of, follow the $$$ trail. That's really all there is to it here. $$$ And FWIW, I'm not saying it's gonna be Mizzou. Just saying that, if it is, that's why.
true. i am the one that said it is spelled "$live". but you can pick up new markets AND have a better choice. and to zackardo (insert that damned lost multi-quote thing here).... the sec doesnt have to snag a spare school. they can sit back and wait a bit then cherry pick. in fact, even tho at some point one more school will have to be brought in if we take atm, we dont have to pick up anyone now. we could just see a vote on atm, and if done, a waiting game while everyone else scrambles and begs behind closed doors. or at least i would rather see it that way than "just taking schools" which the sec doesnt have to do. we arent desperate.
I ain't so sure . . . Clemson brings the Greenville/Spartanburg area, which is a hot and growing metropolitan area. Florida State brings more than Tallahassee. Like Auburn, FSU has huge statewide support in a state with five big metropolitan areas despite being in a small college town. Both can walk the walk. Not sure we need a THIRD tiger mascot in the conference, though.
But markets don't really work that way amigo. I'm not trying to turn this into a FSA thing but as far as coverage goes those schools don't really bring a lot to the table. The gain would be almost immeasurable.
Oh there's not a doubt in my mind that Mizzou has done exactly this already. I think we politely said thanks, now give us a bit to examine our other offers.
How long will it take for the new schools to be considered a true member of the conference and not the red-headed step children? I think there will be a definite division between the new schools and the "real" SEC.
