We will immediately have an intense and historically-based rivalry with the Aggies. I can't wait to head to Kyle Field in purple and gold--hopefully with some Aggie friends in tow.
But adding another division game means that it will be cupcake city for the leagues OOC games. All teams will struggle to have 7 homes games and will not be able to schedule home-and-homes with big-name teams from other conferences. We can forget big inter-conference matchups. I'd much rather see games against VT, West Virginia, North Carolina and Oregon from time to time than just adding A&M every year forever.
That's true. But LSU has been bucking the trend the past two years on the 7 home games deal, with playing openers in Atlanta and Dallas. Do you think we'll play an extra conference game? I'm sure we'd have to if the 16 team scenario plays out. I'm just giddy with excitement that I can drive 3 hours to a CONFERENCE game every other year, being able to leave after work on Friday and drive home on Sunday, and not feel as worn out for a week after that because I didn't have to drive 8 hours back on Sunday. As a Tiger fan in Texas, this is pretty exciting.
Speak for yourself. A&M is the armpit of College Football. Have you been to Kyle Field? They have bleachers in one end zone. You literally can walk on the field to get to a concession stand by going through an iron fence. Don't even get me started on College Station as a city. At least in Baton Rouge we have history and views of a significant river. CStat has three crappy bars in Northgate and cow pastures. If anyone really believe eATMe is a quality opponent is just as delusional as the Kool-Aid drinkers.
I'm not amazed at the number of you that think this is a bad thing. I also don't like it. However, I'm amazed at the number of you that think it might not happen, or are still hoping it won't happen. It's happening, whether we like it or not. I don't know if we'll go straight to 16 by next season, but we're expanding, and a 16 team SEC is in the works. At this point, I think the discussion is about who we add...not if we add.
Yes, I have been to Kyle Field, and after being at Tiger Stadium, it has the feel of a high school stadium--that whole walking through just a fence deal. But, still, it looks like it's going to happen, it's a great rivalry BECAUSE we hate each other, and it's an SEC game that actually in state and close to home. Embrace it, guys, embrace it.
I can't see myself welcoming Texas A&M to the SEC. The only reason they want in is because they don't feel welcome in the Big 12 (Typical Aggie behavior) and want to jump aboard the SEC train. The SEC is the best option for them, but not necessarily the best for us. I would like to start playing them again though...just not as part of the SEC. Supposedly the SEC officials will be meeting tomorrow to discuss it.
