I got stuck in line at a gas station the other day behind a Farrakhan stooge. He was dressed in a fancy creme-colored suit, wearing shades and yelling into a cell phone about "having faith" and how "they can't kill EVERYBODY who disagrees with them, and how this is what the Minister wants, and that's what the Minister wants, blah, blah, blah. Friggin' loudmouth.
I'm sorry BAT, you lost me...are you referring to the 1968 Olympian w/ the "Black power" salute (I believe his name was Bob Johnson)?
I think that the reason no one heard about Spike Lee's comment is because Rush had more of a career to ruin.....more to lose, so to speak. Like the commercial says, America loves drama.
There was a famous riot in BR on January 10th, 1972 between EBR sheriffs and Nation of Islam members that left six people dead, two sheriff's deputiies and four Islam members. The deputies are memorialized at the EBR sheriff's website, http://www.ebrso.org/memorial.htm The Islam group had a church on North Blvd. and was attempting to close the street down. The sheriff's department arrived and was shot at almost immediately. WBRZ channel 2 newscaster Bob Johnson was reporting to the scene and was shot and permanently disabled, both mentally and physically, for life. There was an article about him in the Advocate several years ago. He and his wife raised their children and they still live in BR. That was probably one of the darkest days in local BR history in the last half-century, IMO That's the historical record behind my comment. BTW as someone else noted the black power saluters at the '68 Olympics were Tommy Smith and John Carlos. They are "revered" out here as they were both members of the San Jose State University track team. You may be thinking about to Rafer Johnson, who won the Olympic gold in the decathalon in 1960.
Thanks for sparking my memory, BAT...I was only 6 at the time. I do remember seeing the piece about Bob Johnson, though. And if memory serves, my Dad, who was a National Guardsman at the time, may have been called out for the riots. I'll have to ask him.
It was a completely senseless act of violence by goons who bootlick the people who have NO BUSINESS calling themselves a "religion" - the Black Muslims.
