A couple of notes here... It's important to note there are two different types of staph infection, with the worse being a hospital borne staph. However, there is a staph infection we've all dealt with in one form or another and there's sufficient word coming from those close to the family that he's dealing with the second type of infection. The thing is, is carried on our skin and specifically in dirt which is where the primary problem has developed in this situation because of the difficulty in cleaning this type of wound. To make a comparison on the break, you guys will remember AC Carter and his broken leg. It also was a type of fracture, but the bone was literally crushed and that was the primary reason he wasn't able to come back. On the other hand you probably also remember Wesley Britt who broke his leg in the UT game a couple of years ago. He was able to come back and did well. Britt's injury is a lot like Prothro's. Tyrone won't be ready for spring camp. However, he's still got a 'shirt year available so if he isn't 100% by next fall I'm hoping he'll elected to take a red-shirt. I wish Tim Castille would have taken a 'shirt this year. After his knee reconstruction he still isn't back to 100% but insisted on playing. Last, but definitely not least, thanks for the well wishes. He did get the letter from Bush yesterday and got a call from TO the other day wishing him well. (bout the only good thing I've seen out of TO ) Cool tide-bit about this weekend's game vs UT is Condy Rice will be handling the coin toss along with British foreign secretary Jack Straw.
God bless him and good Luck to him. I really hate it when these injuries happen, it makes me sick. I still think about Chucky Mullens every year during football season, never will forget watching that game! I also think about Derrick Thomas, Don Reddin, Ralph Norwood, Wally Pontiff. I hope I didn't leave anyone out, these guys left way before their time.
As long as just the skin and not the bone isn't infected (osteomyelitis), he should be okay. However, alot of times people get infections of the hardware/metal plates used to secure the bone together, and subsequently need removal of the hardware and additional surgeries.
Two questions. 1. What infection killed Dick Schaap after his hip surgery? 2. Did the thing Prothro wore around his ankle contribute to the break?
I wish Prothro all the best and feel terrible for him. Hopefully, he'll be able to suit up again. I've had two knee reconstructions (from high school cheerleading injuries) and a broken tib-fib/ankle (from being a clutz on a wet floor). The broken leg was far more painful initially, but the knee injuries yielded the lasting impacts. At 35, I'm in pretty serious need of a knee replacement, as the arthritis has become almost unbearable--keeping me up at night and causing me trouble walking. The broken leg is almost an afterthought years later (but I was fortunate to not suffer an infection after the injury). Perhaps Prothro can make it back to the football field. Prayers go out to him.
Don't know the answer on Schaap. The break was just one of those freak things that happen in football.
