watching the video should have little to no effect on anyone's decision. fact of the matter is there are 1000's of people like that everywhere where uncaring spouses probably make this decision based on greed or whatever on a daily basis. should we research and find everyone in this situation and force them to do whatever our emotions tell us? It doesn't mean I do not have compassion as a human being for her yet its one of those situations where its a personal decision of her family. I would like to think her parents would be allowed to decide based on the fact her husband has disconnected himself completely from her. But the bottom line is its no one elses matter regardless if the president or you or I think so. this case is simply mainstream making it seem more important than it actually is and while I weep for her as a fellow human being, I don't think there is an exact right or wrong answer. my personal feelings are to never give up hope regardless the situation yet if I was her I would not want to stay that way for the rest of my life. I would prefer you pulled the plug and/or tube. If by some miracle I would become somewhat functional again, I'd still be a operating in a likely vegetative state. something I would never want. sometimes death seems the better alternative yet I can't state firsthand since I haven't experienced death nor has anyone else firsthand that I know. all the potential interviewees can't answer. So all the so-called medical opinions saying how it feels saying she won't really suffer, etc make me laugh. So they truly know? As you can see, Im torn. I want her to live simply because he sounds like a tool who cares nothing about himself and its the opposite of what he wants. However, Im still not certain its best. maybe it isnt her family's decision. should we keep everyone alive at all costs regardless their situation as long as they are functional on any level? Once again, i've confused myself.
I didn't watch the video because I have actually lived through the tragedy of having a family member in a vegetative state and watched my family wrestle with the decision to remove the feeding tube. You are not the only person here who has some tragedy in their life. I don't need a damn video to help me understand what's going on here. I have no problems with your beliefs. Whether you like it or not, you are the legal guardian of your spouse and will be the person who has to make life decisions for her, if ever put in that position. Whatever you choose to do, it is your personal and private decision. What I resent is the fact that our government feels the need to insert their opinion into this matter. Our government is becoming more and more intrusive each passing day. They have now forced their way into the hospital room and wants some say in who should make the decision. Where does it end? I also resent the hell out of people forcing their will and beliefs on others...
This is my last post on this thread, I am done. It is governments job to protect the people of this country from enemies foreign and domestic and to see to it that peoples, including Terri's rights are upheld. I resent the hell out of people who think starving is the answer in this case or any case. I made this thread so people would watch the video and decide for themselves. You could've at least gave me that courtesy and decided not too. I'm willing to bet that your family situation with your family member wasn't exactly the same as Terri's. Its sad that people don't take the time to learn the facts about a case before they just talk away. A judge has denied the injunction this morning meanwhile we have school shootings going on, children disappearing everyday. I'm glad to hear that Terri supposedly had her fair day in court. Its over as far as i'm concerned, heres a person that can breathe on her own and respond to her surroundings and people don't care if shes starved to death. Our society just keeps decaying away! Rock On
Well, about 150 doctors have actually seen Terry Schiavo in the last 15 years and they all agree that she is vegetative. The politicians and those doctors who agree with them have only seen a single 5-year-old video taken by her parents. I have to go with the doctors who have seen her. The morality of this is tough. Which is more cruel--death or lingering vegetation? I have to agree with the husband: allow her to go to her maker in the natural way. Technology should not be used to unreasonably postpone the natural process. God's process. And in no case should self-serving politicians interfere in this family's trauma.
I'm going to break my rule 1 time only. What I hope comes out of this is that the government takes this up and we decide not to starve people to death, vegetable or not. If a person has no brain activity then maybe we should consider a shot, just like what we do with animals and killers, its more humane. Look, I am somewhat torn here but I will always take the side of Life. If a person can't respond to their surroundings and are living on machines keeping them alive thats one thing but this isn't the case here. I didn't know people in vegetative states could breath on their own or respond to their surroundings, this is Terri. Someone elighten me!
Am I the only one completely tired of this story? I've ignored the news all week because of it. I guess that makes me "heartless" but I just don't care. Anytime the US government has to pass laws to create jurisdiction something is just not right. The husband is shady himself. As well as people rooting for a woman's death, it's just strange to see. I'm glad I'm not a federal judge in Florida. I think this will come down to a 5 - 4 decision in the US Supreme Court with O'Conner being the 5 on either side.
Cert. Denied. No way do they enter this fray...their decision would have too much impact on cases with divergent circumstances. I agree w/ your prediction of 5-4, but I don't think it will get to that point.
