    BREAKING: LSU lands Eric Monroe

LSU has been pressing to land the No. 1 safety prospect in the country, and now the Tigers have done it.

The Tigers have received a verbal commitment from Houston's Eric Monroe, who is ranked by 247Sports as the top safety in the country. The commitment bumps LSU up to the No. 1 class in the country.

Monroe originally planned to commit at The Opening, but decided to go public with his pledge on Wednesday evening. He's currently ranked as the No. 15 overall prospect in the country, regardless of position. In the last rankings update, Monroe is just one spot from becoming a five-star prospect.

Monroe becomes LSU's 17th commitment for the 2016 class.

    A little more:
LSU adds another massive piece to the 2016 class as four-star safety Eric Monroe commits to the Tigers.

LSU picked up its second commitment of the day Wednesday when four-star safety Eric Monroe made his pledge to the Tigers.

Monroe ranks as the No. 2 safety in the country and is another Top 100 player added to LSU's secondary. Monroe has been a massive LSU target for the better part of a year, and has made several visits to Baton Rouge.

He was last on campus earlier this month for LSU's first camp of the summer, when he went through workouts all three days.

LSU and Texas A&M were long considered the two favorites, but most gave the Tigers a significant edge. That came true as Monroe finally put an end to his recruitment and committed.

LSU already has a commitment from two of the top corners in the country in five-star Saivion Smith and Andraez Williams. The Tigers also have a commitment from four-star safety Cameron Lewis.

Monroe joined fellow Texan Rahssan Thornton in committing to LSU on Wednesday. He's the eighth in less than three weeks, following Williams, Glen Logan, Caleb Roddy, Jakori Savage, Andre Anthony, Erick Fowler and Thornton.

LSU expands its lead as the No. 1 overall recruiting class in the country.

Big pickup, I know the staff wanted him bad. Welcome aboard Mr Monroe and all the recent recruits. Looks like they're trying to wrap this class up early, not many spots left.

Saw him play cornerback last night against Clear Springs HS. Needs to learn how to cover without grabbing the receivers jersey. Should have been called for holding 5 times on the first two series last night.

Excellent pickup and grab that jersey until they call it.

Shows excellent awareness...refs letting them play then you have to. Opposing fans probably see it different.

LSU now the only team in the nation with 3 five star players in the composite 247 rankings.

Alabama still has 0, which is a major surprise (both teams with 18 recruits).
