from a Houston Chronicle article on him back in September 10, 2012 at the beginning of his junior season: In Friday night's season opener, Upchurch... caught five passes for 66 yards and rushed five times for 53 yards Upchurch (originally) thought of himself as a basketball player, which is why he skipped football his freshman year. He made the varsity basketball team that year But once friends and coaches got into his ear about football, he became a two-sport athlete. Upchurch didn't know what to expect when he stepped onto the field last September. Then a sophomore, Upchurch was a backup wide receiver learning the offense after skipping football as a freshman. But it didn't take long for him to make an impact. One play to be exact. Upchurch raced past the secondary and caught a 72-yard touchdown pass in the first quarter of Dawson's victory over district rival Friendswood. It was the first play of his varsity career. That is all it took for the Dawson coaching staff to realize the Eagles had something special. "We've been throwing to him ever since," coach Eric Wells said. Upchurch turned into one of the Houston area's top talents last year as Dawson won the Region III-4A, Division II championship. He caught 40 passes for 789 yards and seven TDs in 10 games. "I fell in love with it (football), and look where I am now," he said. He said Texas and Texas A&M told him they would offer him a scholarship. LSU has. Upchurch is elusive, fast and powerful. Perhaps most importantly for the Eagles, Upchurch is theirs. He has a full season of experience, and he's ready to lead the area's No. 1-ranked Class 4A team deeper than it got last season - the state semifinals.
