Vacarro is an outstanding signing that will universally be praised as an A+ pick by all the experts But i feel you, even though i know pretty much nothing about Floyd other than how a bunch of mocks had him going #3 overall and how pretty much every mock had him going top 10 and all of them had him going top 14, just that alone will make wonder if we made the best move passing on him....but Floyd fell all the way to #23, so apparently the Saints weren't the only team that thought he was VASTLY overrated by the mock drafts
You give up over 5 yards a carry and never come close to pressuring the QB and DB is a wasted pick. Vaccaro may be a great player, but he doesn't make the Saints defense better. He's basically a younger version of Harper. Without a run defense or pass rush he's just a fresher piece of toast.
That was with the 4-3. Our front seven is much more suited for a 3-4, with Gallette, Wilson, and the addition of Victor Butler, we are stacked with rush OLBers, its just nobody has heard of them yet. We add a prospect like Jones there, good chance he doesn't even start We do need more DL depth though, but we did need a safety badly
Vaccaro is projected as great at both SS and FS Jenkins was projected a great at both CB and FS So not the same. Plus Jenkins as already shown he's terrible - he was the worst rated safety in the NFL last year, only behind our other safety Roman Harper (although I'm holding out faith Jenkins gets a lot better). Vaccaro hasn't played for us yet so we don't know if he's going to be terrible like Jenkins So not the same.
"Detillier said Vaccaro reminds him of former LSU safety Laron Landry" http://www.thenewsstar.com/article/20130425/NEWS01/130425034/Saints-choose-FS-Kenny-Vaccaro Makes sense to Detillier that the Saints would take Vaccaro. He had Vaccaro going #16 in his mock yesterday, and he wrote this before the draft: "Jones, Texas free safety Kenny Vaccaro, Washington cornerback Desmond Trufant and a real long shot in Missouri defensive tackle Sheldon Richardson, who I think the Carolina Panthers will pick one slot ahead of New Orleans, are strong possibilities to land in New Orleans if the Saints don’t trade back."
So other teams rejects and guys that couldnt find serious PT on the worst defense in NFL history are going to turn into quality starters by simply switching to a 3-4? The Saints have very very little talent in the front seven.
Wilson and Galette would have had serious PT last year had we run a 3-4. They are too small to be effective DEs in a 4-3 Butler isn't a reject, he's a stud that had a bunch of NFL teams after him, and a bunch of the Cowboy fanbase pissed they lost him, and a bunch of fans from other fanbases pissed they weren't able to beat the Saints out for his services This is elementary stuff. Have you not been keeping up with the Saints at all?
And this is what Detillier told Glenn Guilbeau early today: “Certainly Vaccaro is a possibility,” Detillier said. “He’s an intimidating guy in the secondary" And this is what Detillier told Guilbeau 2 days ago: "Among the players most likely to be selected by the Saints at 15 — if still out there — are Georgia outside linebacker Jarvis Jones (6- foot-3, 241), LSU defensive end Barkevious Mingo (6-4, 241), Missouri defensive tackle Sheldon Richardson (6-2, 294) and Texas free safety Kenny Vaccaro (6-0, 214), according to NFL Draft expert Mike Detillier."
From the article you linked: "He (Vaccaro) is not a ball hawk," Detillier said. "He's got some skills you really like at free safety. He's an intimidating guy in the secondary and strong in run support, but he's not a guy to come down with a lot of interceptions. And this is a defense that hasn't gotten a lot of turnovers since the 2009 season." How is that an improvement over what we already have? Harper hits people, and he is good in the blitz and run support. He has never created turnovers. He had Vaccaro going #16? Fine, let 16 have him. We were 15, and we passed on a guy who would have ideally fit a desperate need.
Nobody fits a desperate need for the Saints more than Vaccaro. As for his ball-bawking ability, Mike D missed the boat on that one (which shows you how great Vaccaro is that Mike D listed him in all his lists off players the Saints need most, despite not realizing his ballhawk potential) Yes it's true that Vaccaro didn't put up big INT numbers at Texas, which was a concern until people started watching all his game film, worked him out at combine, etc and they found out Vaccaro does actually have good ball hawk potential.
