He is the real deal and he is a strong possibility to LSU, however, his offers are just beginning to role in and he will go through the process.
HIs recruitment will be done sooner rather than later. Wants to get it over with before his senior year and also because he will be an early enrollee. He does have some question marks but ones I can deal with. Short passing game is very good, makes quick decisions, has the ball ready to throw at a moments notice, avoids the rush without panic, great leader, etc... But he needs work on the deep ball and longer passing game. IMO I would rather a QB have the short game because it is a little easier to develop a deep ball with work.
I usually would rather have a tall QB with a big arm, but Crowton prefers the short passing game and his offense thrives with a QB with the attributes you mentioned above...like a Drew Brees.
I wouldn't say Crowton favors a guy like Ely over a big QB with a strong arm because he has dealt with all types over his career and has targeted many big arm guys over the last few years but they are not a dime a dozen. He does need a QB who can do a little of everything (Very complex) but looks like Miles has been pushing for a more simplified offense and he will get it this year from what I have heard. Plus look at the NC QBs the last 6 years including Mack and Flynn. Just did what they had to get the playmakers the ball and mainly focused on the short game equals success in college football as of late.
I wasn't trying to say Crowton favored Ely over a rocket arm QB. What I meant to say is because Crowton favors the short passing game, a player like Ely's weakness (weak arm) isn't that much of an issue. A quarterback that is accurate in the short to intermediate range works fine in this offense, even with a less than stellar arm.
I know what you were saying but I was saying Crowton in a perfect world he doesn't really favor a short passing game QB but a QB who can take in a ton of info and do a little of everything and not just a short passing game. Look at his history of QBs before he came to LSU and you will see a little of the pattern. But what you are describing seems to be what is currently working in college football. QBs who are smart, gets the ball to his players in space, short passing game with long ball strikes, etc... seem to be what is getting the job done and not the ones who are highly regarded 5* prospects.
As long as the QB understands the complex system and can make the reads, a big arm is a just a bonus.
A pair of good running legs is a bonus too !!! If they would have let JJ tuck and run more ( like in the Ga. Tech bowl game) we'd have been a mot more successful on offense.
The insider article I read on Rivals made it seem like he will take his time, considering the offers he is getting.
