That was the last year of the consolation game at the Final Four. We lost to Virginia and Ralph Sampson. Also, President Reagan was shot that day...
I will never forget that and b/c of that will never be a Bob Knight fan no matter how "good" a coach he is.
Yeah, that one was too easy. Hey, wasn't the '81 team the one for which that song, "Tigers to the Top" was recorded? I was only 10 years old at the time, so I'm not 100% sure.
I beleive Ricky Blanton was hurt during the 87 season and played in the 88 season as a Junior. 89 was Chris Jackson's Freshman year. The key players in the tourny run were Darryl Joe, having replaced the freshman Irvin at point, and Bernard Woodside, who held Steve Alford to 0 points from the floor in the "Freak" defense. The amazing thing about the phone incident is that the reason Knight was mad was that he had just been T-ed for coming on the court to protest a 3-second call. I was at the game, and I'm not sure the refs would have gotten out alive had they thrown out Knight like they should have. If you ever get a chance to see it, watch how the refs totally bolt after Nikita missed the shot. Just think what would have happened if he made it--they were already signalling that they would have counted it. That is the only sporting event I have ever walked out of mad. GEAUX TIGERS
