I'm not a believer in taking away people's guns, but why, really, in 2012, is it a strength to have armed citizens?
It is my belief that armed citizens is a check for government. It is also a check against Waring nations. You would be a fool to think that the US will never have a challenger. I mean, even the reality of a world shortage on fossil fuels is real enough within 150 years and is a REAL possibility. We may not be alive, but our lineage will. Just imagine the unimaginable for a second. Hell, even go back to WWII. What if Japan kept up the assault? What if they diverted all of their resources towards the US instead of invading China? What if Japan did nothing and we let Germany run free like we intended? We may hope for peace on Earth, but I am not that stupid. We are human after-all. Or think of a natural disaster on a much larger scale. What if a giant meteor hit earth? What then? How would you protect your family? Some might laugh, but great things are possible and we are just specs in this universe. Part of the security and freedom you experience now is because of armed citizens.
Not to mention if you read the bible, the rapture will leave millions on Earth to do what? Most likely fight it out is my guess. Or the true apocalypse. That would be a serious battle I am sure.
Okay, see? You've given me lots of way-out-there reasons why Americans need to be armed. I'm 42, and I've never owned a gun. I don't plan to, either. I don't mind others owning guns, but I really don't understand the need for assault weapons. I just don't.
I believe the second amendment was written in a time personal arms were equal to military. Having just come through a rebellion initiated by informal groups gathering and organizing to fight the Brits, the writers of the constitution wanted to preserve the ability of "the people" to successfully rebel against a tyranny. This balance held at least until the Texas rebellion from Mexico. The rapid development of modern arms has changed the balance forever. It is almost inconceivable that any group armed with weapons legally purchased could exist for more than a second in battle with a modern army. Don't use Afghanistan or Syria as examples because those societies and situations bear no resemblance to current day US. In that sense the 2nd amendment is obsolete and meaningless today. That doesn't mean I agree that the state can take our guns. The prescedent of 250 years establishes that people can own guns for private use with limited restriction. I think there is a place for restiction of armor pircing bullets, as many have said you don't need more than 3 or four round in a gun to hunt.
Though Afghanistan and Syria are valid examples. In fact, multiply those examples by 50 and that would be what it is like to take the US.
