I wouldn't bet on it. 67.8% Comp. Rate 3129 yds 28 TDs 8 Int 167 QB rating JaMarcus never sniffed a Heisman. I'm not saying it's impossible, but Mett would have to have that kind of season next year and then return for his senior season.
It should be interesting to watch all the quarterbacks compete in the spring. I wouldn't be suprised if we alternate Mett & Randall in a similar fashion to JJ & Lee.
Do we know how the addition of Texas A&M and Missouri will affect next year's schedule yet? I'm wondering if we'll have to re-shuffle the schedule a bit. Back when I went to LSU we would almost always open the season with Texas A&M.
So we hope. But we haven't seen him play. Shepard was going to be great right out of the gates, too. It took Russell three years to be ready to play at LSu and he never did get NFL ready. Mettenberger is an unknown at this point. He's bound to be good, but not necessarily great.
I do not think Mett is the savior of our program, but I do think he will give our offense a legitimate option at QB and offer balance. Right now, IF we had to ride JL against Bama (or anyone)to generate offense and bring us back from behind, I think we would be in trouble. Mett should give us that ablity, which is what I am excited about. Given those above numbers, in a 12 game season Mett would have to average 261 a game passing. I happen to think with our OL and WR's that is not such a stretch Also remember, the Heisman is no longer about the best player in college football, it is about the best player on the best team. If Mett puts up the above numbers and LSU is hanging around in the top 5 next season, his name will be mentioned in the Heisman race.
That's because his 2005 season was fairly pedestrian. 2400 yards, 15 TDs, 9 Ints, 60 % Comp Pct. LSU lost 2 games pretty early on in the 2006 season to take him out of any consideration. LSU started 4-2 and Russell didn't hit his stride until after this point in the season. LSU stands a very good chance of going 13-1 or 14-0 in Mettenberger's first season. You won't be able to ignore him too easily. It all depends again on how much we let loose of the reins on offense. Russell was pretty restrained in 2005. It took until the 2nd half of 2006 to let him loose.
I think it also matters how much playing time mett gets. Does he get all the snaps? Does he split time with a running qb? If so how much time? 80-20%?50-50%? Does miles continue with a split rotation at qb? Two qb system the new normal way of doing business with miles? Lots of things can factor in.
I think you are right about all of that. But, at Miles' core, I think he is a one QB, smash mouth run first, throw to be balanced kind of Offensive mind. I am truly convinced that we use two QB's because that is the hand he is dealt right now. I think he would like to have just one QB to count on. Do you think JJ or JL see the field at all in their first two seasons IF Perriloux does not get kicked off the team? I think Perriloux plays all the snaps and JJ/JL get time to learn and develop. JJ and JL were baptized by fire and would have benefitted from the redshirt year plus two seasons to learn the system before ever playing. Do you think JJ or JL would be different/better QB's had that happende? I personally think yes for JL. His baptizim by fire was a lot to overcome.
I suspect 80/20 to 90/10 split. Closer to 90/10 since Randall has never thrown a pass before and I think he will come in to run the option solely, especially at first.
