2 shots to win just one game against the winner of Arkansas and Virginia. We had a nice discussion going on in the game thread so I thought a thread of it's own would do nicely. I am leaning strongly with going for the kill shot and starting Ranaudo and having Coleman as your backup option. What one must realize is Ross has to pitch in the best of 3 series regardless, so I say let him start game 1 of the finals (if we lose with Ranaudo and forced to use Coleman to win the bracket) and then come back with Ranaudo and Coleman in games 2 and 3 (that's getting ahead of ourselves, but is necessary to make a point). If LSU wins with Ranaudo Friday, then it's Coleman, Ross and then Ranaudo. If LSU is pushed to use Coleman, it's Ross, Ranaudo and Coleman. The only concern is Ranaudo pitching on 3 days rest. Coleman I would think would have no issue with that. I just have supreme confidence Ranaudo will have a great game after having an off night Saturday and allow Coleman to start the best 2 of 3 championship series. I just want our 2 best chances to get to the finals. The opposition to this is to start Ross in game 1 of the bracket finals, hope LSU wins and then you can start Ranaudo and Coleman in games 1 and 2 of the finals, but would be forced to use Ross in game 3 if necessary. In this scenario, you use Ross twice potentially. Hopefully that was confusing enough and you'll simply agree with my train of thought. What say you?
While I am tempted to agree with you I would start Reynaudo on Friday to give the Tigers a better chance of only having to play one game against either R Kansas or Virginia. If Reynaudo comes back from his poor performance on Saturday and wins then LSU could start Coleman in game one of the championship series and Ross in game two. If a third game is necessary then Reynaudo could pitch on 4 days rest. Yes, he is used to pitching with 6 days of rest but the fact is that in the major leagues with a 5 pitcher rotation they are pitching with 4 days rest. There is no reason to think that that Reynaudo, who has been projected as the number one draft pick next year couldn't do the same. If Ross were to lose on Friday LSU would have no choice but to come back with Reynaudo on Saturday but I would take the gamble that by Friday the pitcing staffs of either Virginia or Arkansas will be pretty used up.
You pitch the best pitcher available. Everytime. There is no sense in saving a pitcher for a game that we haven't gotten to yet. Win the next game and move on. Do not want to risk anything. :crystal::geaux::crystal::geaux::crystal:
yeah thats why we threw ross in the first game of the regional. id likely throw ross and hope it paid off. not sure what id do if ross got shelled however. then how i used my pen i dunno. you cant just quit competing and leave him out there. or just throw buzzy the rest of the way. it sets a bad tone if you lose 100-0 and you're marching out dudes that never pitched.
I haven't seen it mentioned but who do you think Arkansas or Virginia would have on the mound for the game? Would they be back to their ace (yes I know we beat VA's ace Saturday) or are they going to use them in the elimination game Wednesday? Not sure if that is much of a concern with the way our boys are swinging the bats right now but maybe something to factor in.... I love the way this team is dominating in both hitting and fielding right now - keep it up as I want to head back to Omaha next week for the finals!!! :geauxtige:LSU231:
This is the key in my mind. I agree we should not look ahead past the bracket finals. So I'd pitch Ross with Ranaudo ready to rock if Austin is struggling. Another instance where it'd be really cool to have lunch with CPM and get his thoughts on this.
I go with Austin Ross in our next game and save Anthony and Louis. If we lose with Ross then go with Anthony in game 2, and save Louis for the weekend. I think it would be a disservice to pitch Anthony in the next game, we have to go with Ross, he looked great against Virginia in relief, and if he gets run support he is a pretty solid pitcher.
I go with Ross as well. He has looked good in both tournament appearances thus far, granted, the first was against Southern. He has thrown the fewest pitches of the 3 over the last 2 weeks. I don't think run support will be an issue. Like was mentioned earlier in the thread, we don't know who they are going to throw, but they wont be as fresh as we are.
