I'd rather we keep in house...I think one of our position coaches can step up and do a good job...I don't see the need to bring an outsider...I have faith in our coaching staff.
That's what brought down Dinardo, hiring from within. Haven't heard any of our assistants being talked about for a coordinator job anywhere which probably means they aren't ready. If you have someone that's ready for the job fine but you hire the best person for the job no matter where they are on staff or not. Tenuta is a proven DC with a pretty good resume, none of our current staff appear to be on his level.
The thing is that you need some balance...Gotta remember that we've been having a lot of coaches come and go the past couple of years and at some point there needs to be some continuity to what we do. 3 defensive coordinators in 5 years is too much, IMO...I don't have anything against Tenuta, it just bothers me that some fans wanted Pellini out in favor of Tenuta...To me that's ridiculous!!!
Not being contentious, but which position coach would you elevate and for what particular reason(s)? I am not that familiar with your D coaches. A related thought, are any of the current staff moving to Nebraska with Bo? I would think if Bo thought one was ready for the jump he might take someone with him and give the promotion.
You also have to look at the bigger picture: GT doesn't have the talent at his disposal the way LSU does. Over the past 3 seasons, Tenuta's GT defenses have ranked in the top 20 in virtually every defensive category. Sure, they'll run into an offense that they can't handle, and that muddies up his accomplishments, but for the most part, his defenses and defensive philosophy have worked. I mean, Les Miles didn't exaclty beat everyone on his schedule that he should have when he was at Okie State....didn't stop us from hiring him. ...and look at what he's done. Also, how much were the GT players ready to play this game to begin with?? They just had their head coach get fired....they were playing a bowl game in BOISE, IDAHO.... Yes, I like Tenuta because I've seen his defenses enough over the past 2 seasons to realize that one poor outting doesn't mean he can't coach. Remember Pelini's debut against 'Zona State???? We were ALL ready to ship him off without giving him much of a chance.
Doug Mallory, LSU's current DB coach, is being mentioned as a possible replacement to Pelini. Honestly, I think he's probably a second or third option, but that doesn't mean he's a bad option. And Pelini is not bringing any of the current staff with him to Nebraska, except I think I heard a couple grad assistants.
That's the most points ever scored against his defense. Consider the circumstances. I'm with Clair on this one.
I don't know that we know enough of any of our current coaches. I mean, as outsiders to coaching meetings and gameplanning sessions, I don't think you can definitively say that any of our current D-coaches have given us ANY concrete reason(s) to believe that they were responsible for anything inparticular. And on the other hand, maybe one of the D-coaches REALLY stepped up in those "coaches only" meetings and Miles thinks highly of him. I don't know...but I don't think anyone else outside of the football operations department knows enough either.
