I am confused... Because I hear everyone say this. But then when I suggest that that's exactly what LSU did in OT, throwing the long third down pass, people say LSU should have played soft and kicked the FG. So what gives?
the best overtime imo is either to play a whole quarter (probably too long), or to do like every other effing sport and play a pro-rated quarter. The NBA's quarter is 12 minutes. They play a 5 minute overtime. Take that formula. 15 minute quarter, play a 6:30 minute overtime, give both teams a timeout and let's see how it goes down.
I thought the call was good in OT, but he just simply missed Byrd over the middle for what would have likely been a TD. Great call, poor execution. It makes you wonder if there are no check downs for Lee at this point? He didn't look anywhere else except for LaFell in the endzone. What an easy game for that Johnson dude to play at Safety.
You can't call the same play 5 or 6 times and expect it to work every time. The roll out plays had Lee locked onto the WR closest to the sideline. It worked with Toliver, but they eventually caught onto it.
My complaing about the final drive and OT is this. Lee finally started throwing well when Crowton was calling passes early in the count on first and second downs. Lee is much better in those situations. He drove LSU down to tie. So when LSU is back up, instead of playing to win he gets conservative. Lee isnt very good when he HAS to throw and the D knows it. After two uber conservative and predictable runs thats the situation he was in. Lee is much better throwing on first and second downs. Same thing in OT, Crowton put Lee in a must throw situation. The pass was ill-advised as can be, but still, dont put him in that situation.
I don't think the wildcat was a bad call in OT, but what I did think was bad was that they lined up and didn't immediately snap the ball. It gave the defense way too much time to react to Murphy. It had worked beautifully the other time it was run--when it took the defense by surprise.
i have to disagree with calling the wildcat. it worked once for 9 yards, but if you are going to do it do it on first and 10 or second and short. not second and long. You dont want to put our worthless qb in a situation where the potential for failure outweighs the potential for success. There is no way in hell Jarett Lee could have thought to himself that brandon lafell of all people makes that catch in double coverage. He just threw it, which is bull****. If charles scott and keiland williams are dominating just keep them in and keep pounding with misdirections, not the wildcat.
