did anyone see this game tonight? how about that clock management in the last 30 of the 4th? what do you think Coach Bill Stewart was thinking? or was he thinking at all? to me, he seemed a little lost for most of the game. what say you?
I'd say beings I had WV -2.5 he was trying his best to lighten my bankroll for the season. No biggie. I'll double up this weekend.
I agree. After he signed that long term deal yesterday, that was the last red flag regarding his job I needed to see to tell me he was gone... Those stupid ass announcers killed me. They mismanaged the clock to the 30 second mark, but after they didn't get it on forth down you would think one out of three would realize there is no reason to call a timeout and they were obviously running it down for hail mary.
Late in regulation Noel Devine should have tried to get out of bounds. That cost them a good 20 seconds. There probably should have been a timeout taken with 44 seconds left, but WVU got back to the line and ran a play getting out of bounds. That stopped the clock with 22 seconds left, bringing up 3rd and short. If they had picked up the first down on the next play, with 2 timeouts left they had a shot at least two more plays to get into field goal range. When WVU got stuffed bringing up 4th down, you could clearly see the coaches on the sidelines signaling the players on the field to wait on calling a timeout. That makes sense to me. If you do call timeout and don't pick up the 4th down, that would leave time on the clock and give the other team a chance to run a play themselves. WVU let the clock get down to 4 seconds to make sure the next play would be the last of regulation. I thought Fowler missed the boat badly on that, characterizing it as though Stewart was unaware that the the 4th quarter was about to end. Again I think a timeout should have been taken with 44 seconds left, but after that I don’t think WVU did anything wrong.
i really don't think they did anything wrong either. they had a game plan and stuck with it. i just felt like Stewart was lost for a large part of the game. maybe pat white was doing his job for him or something. i just found the whole game to be oddly managed, though interesting and fun to watch. the last minute just made stewart look like he was aloof and wasn't making the right decisions. at the end of the 4th, i'm sure he was counting on devine to get 6 in OT. didn't happen. missed field goal. momentum was with CO all the way. i agree with those above, stewart is likely gone. 0-3 is not the way to stick around.
As "The biggest lsu fan living in West Virginia", I have a unique perspective of the mountaineers. My stepbrother is one of the biggest Wvu boosters in the state. This year, he is the most miserable football fan in the state. He, as well as alot of people, were amazed at the deal Wvu offered Stewart this year. Actually, alot of people were shocked that Stewart accepted. He say's insiders feel that Stewart accepts the fact that he's out of his element. He's a damn good asst., but doesn't have the influence over his players to carry the team as it's leader. When RichRod announced his intentions to leave for Michigan in the final hours to the team in the locker room, Pat White threw his helmet in RR's direction and stated he lied to his mother. Wvu squandered it's season by not hiring a talented head coach to replace the traitor, and wasted a whole lot of talent and a helluva chance to do real well this year. Also probobly screwed alot of this year's seniors out of a good look from some nfl teams. A total bamboozle from the braintrust known as Wvu. View attachment 11349
If my memory is correct, there was roughly 1 minute left in the game and WV had the ball around their own 40 yard line with 2 timeouts. I was expecting WV to win the game at that point. I just knew they would manage their time, their timeouts and get themselves into field goal range. After the 44 second point, there was a lot of time that rolled off the clock. WV looked confused and unsure of themselves. Give CO's defense some credit. Their D-Line stuffed the run time after time in the second half, and I noticed that CO tackled well for most of the night. :crystal::geaux::crystal::geaux::crystal:
I agree that Stewart seems lost at times in the game. But there's more to WV's woes than clock mgt. They are undisciplined and one-dimensional. I think those are their biggest problems. 91 yards in penalties, and 45 rushes to 14 passes. Not tough to gameplan a team like that.
