Re: Benton signs with Auburn per Rivals Radio I wish Benton the best of luck! He'll represent our state high schools well in a program that will be a 2nd tier SEC program for whatever time - if any - he remains academically eligible. LSU stood by him. As great of a talent he may be, he was not LSU Tiger material.
Re: Benton signs with Auburn per Rivals Radio Sounds like the kid got screwed over. Hate to hear that, and would like to know what really happened.
Re: Benton signs with Auburn per Rivals Radio they went ahead and re-ranked him for you and players like kerry murphy arent being ranked at all. you delusional barners. cant be thankful for anything.
Re: Benton signs with Auburn per Rivals Radio idk who gave me negative rep on this but i just had bring it back up. looks like me and others were right after all. http://www.tigerdroppings.com/rant/messagetopic.asp?p=12033676 michael cauble says that les told him he had to make a tough decision regarding benton. so lesson learned here fellows?
Re: Benton signs with Auburn per Rivals Radio i read through the thread you linked, tenebrism interesting stuff, except for the part about Benton being a silent commit since his AU visit. That part is inaccurate. I just think Les is playing the percentages. Prolly the righ move for a team in LSU's position, and prolly a good move for Auburn considering theirs.....
Re: Benton signs with Auburn per Rivals Radio I don't know all of the details, but it just sounds like a situation that no one wanted to happen, but if you start looking at some of the facts surrounding recruiting, coaching and college football in general, you can see why Benton ended up at Auburn. For starters, it's widely known by now, that the NCAA penalizes programs for players that don't make the grades: each team must meet cumulative GPA standards in order for the NCAA to not strip them of scholarships. For all his athletic ability, and dedication to LSU, DeAngelo Benton was just not cutting academically. College isn't for everyone. If Benton takes 3 years post-high school in order to complete academic requirements, what's he going to do when he's ACTUALLY a college student????? Just because he can play football, doesn't mean he can take college level courses and STAY qualified after one season. Now, Miles is looking at a class without a player at a position (WR) in this class--especially in the long-term if Benton's academic struggles continue and he ends up leaving for those struggles. We only have 25-26 scholarships, and we need guys that we can count on as being around 3-4 years. I feel bad for Benton. But Miles has other things to worry about...
Re: Benton signs with Auburn per Rivals Radio I don't like to see any player's scholarship pulled, but it's not like this was a case where he got injured or we just changed our mind to make the numbers work. First & foremost, he took 2 years to get eligible and at some point we have to reconsider whether he'll be able to handle college. Secondly, he visited Auburn without our coaches' knowledge. It's not a great situation, but I think both sides did what they had to do - and neither is wrong for it.
Re: Benton signs with Auburn per Rivals Radio just received this in an email: http://www.thenewsstar.com/article/20090205/UPDATES02/90204039 Miles pulled Benton's scholarship offer according to Guilbeau: Signing Day trade: LSU swaps Benton for Randle quote: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Trades usually do not happen on national signing day, but LSU apparently completed on Wednesday what it hopes will be a blockbuster deal. The Tigers may also be due for a player to be named later from Auburn. After signing former Bastrop and academically troubled receiver DeAngelo Benton the last two years and hosting him on a visit last weekend, LSU coach Les Miles pulled a long standing scholarship offer to Benton on Tuesday night so as to grease the wheels for the arrival of the No. 1 receiver in the nation – Bastrop’s Rueben Randle. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- quote: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Miles was asked at a press conference late Wednesday if Benton still had a scholarship offer by Wednesday morning before Benton signed with Auburn. Before Miles could answer, LSU athletic director Joe Alleva – located in the back of the room - frantically waved his arms to attempt to get Miles not to answer. But Miles answered, “No.” -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Randle's father did not like the idea of Randle having to compete with Benton on the WR depth chart. In fact, he thought Benton was out of the picture until just recently when it became apparent that Benton was still in the mix and headed to LSU: quote: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Randle’s father also was perturbed that he didn’t know LSU was quietly recruiting Benton, an academic casualty in 2007 and 2008 who had not been heard from in months until he said last week that he would be visiting LSU. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Bastrop coach Bradshaw is pissed: quote: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- “I think how it all went down was wrong,” an upset Bastrop High coach Brad Bradshaw said Wednesday night. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- quote: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- “All of the time I spent getting De-Lo eligible the last two years was so he could go back to LSU,” Bradshaw said Wednesday. “Now he’s not going to LSU. I’m sure he’s not very happy. The bottom line is D-Lo is going to Auburn.” Benton did visit Auburn two weeks ago, but Bradshaw said he had his heart set on going to LSU and was not serious about Auburn. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- quote: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- "I know what I say don't matter," Bradshaw said. "I'm nobody. But I don't like how this went down." -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Benton had always planned on going to LSU: quote: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- “I'm signing with LSU,” Benton said Tuesday on his cellular phone. “I told coach Miles that when I was down there over the weekend (on Saturday). I'll be signing Wednesday at Bastrop." Benton did not return calls to his cellular phone on Wednesday
Re: Benton signs with Auburn per Rivals Radio "negative, Ghostrider, the pattern is full" LSU coaches knew about his plans on the Tuesday prior to Benton's visit to Auburn.
Re: Benton signs with Auburn per Rivals Radio feel bad about what happened to dlo. that beign said, what happened to lsu with the bell and janzen decommits shows we have to be looking out for #1. it was pretty shady what happened to dlo, but it was best for lsu.
