Re: DeAngelo Benton - what ever happened to him?

He's a good coach.. but from what i've seen of his offenses.. it's alot like Floridas. They don't put out NFL receivers often.. all of their receivers seem slot types to me. Perhaps that's just my perception.. but often enough.. perception is reality.

I said Benton would not fare well under a Rich Rodriguez system. Why do you think Ryan Mallet immediately transferred to Arkansas, upon hearing Rodriguez was hired as head coach?

Ryan Mallet is a QB who was capable of giving Michigan 250-300 yard passing games on a fairly consistent basis (pocket passer). Rich Rodriguez wants a QB who will run for more yards than pass.

Benton doesn't need to get mixed up in that.

This isn't even about Benton anymore. Mallet left because he's basically Drew Bledsoe. A statue with a rocket for an arm. Perfect Big Ten QB, except Rodriguez isn't running a typical Big Ten offense.

Now I see where we got off base. Fact is, Rodriguez predicates his spread on personnel. At Tulane, the receivers were the stars of his offense. His first few years at WVU the receivers ran the show. Then along came Pat White. At Tulane, Shaun King was capable of pulling it down and running, and he did because the spread option is useless without a QB who can threaten the edges and force defenses to contain him.

The spread he ran the past few years at WVU was different from what he did prior to Pat White's arrival. His best playmakers were in his backfield. That's atypical of how he likes to run his spread option, but that's the personnel he had to work with.

If he gets better playmakers at receiver, his spread option will be run differently. More like the way it was run at Tulane when King set a then record for QB rating. I don't think DLo should be one of them, but for different reasons than you're stating.

I also believe there is a correlation between location and the talent he has at receiver. Fact is, WVU spent most of their time doing more with less. They did well anyway because they had a super athlete in Pat White and a running back who did pretty well in the NFL his rookie year in Steve Slaton. But think about it, what big time recruit wants to go to West Virginia? That's my point. Given a more attractive locale, maybe his talent production increases. But give him a chance instead of saying a kid will fail if they go there.

But that's the thing, he ran his offense based on his personnel at WVU, but that was just the past few years. You guys may not recall, but he was on record saying what he had with White and Slaton was unique to how he liked to run his offense. Before that, it was based on getting the ball in the hands of his receivers.

I don't believe he's had enough of a chance to put out high level talent seeing as how he's just now getting to a high level university. WVU just now got to shine in the Big East. Before that, they had to take the backseat behind Miami and Va. Tech...and sometimes Boston College.

No, RR just wants a QB that can run. Mallet is Dan Marino version 2.0. He has had offenses that have passed for tons of yards. Need to go look at his offense prior to Pat White. He, like all good coaches, adapt to their talent (seems like we had this conversation discussing Randle ;) ).

After canceling his trip earlier, if what I am hearing is correct, DeAngelo is in Auburn tonight for a visit.

Agreed. Not with how he apparently handled the situation initially. If he's in Auburn I'd be pretty confident that he gave the coaching staff the heads up and was encouraged to go.

That is what has me wondering. The first time he scheduled a trip to Auburn I thought he was paid a visit and the trip was canceled right after. This visit was kept very quiet. I don't have information as to whether he did or did not notify Miles, but not many at AU knew he was coming.

Another rumor spread that Benton was visiting Auburn once again this weekend and those rumors have been put to rest. Again.

    100 % solid to LSU.
