Re: DeAngelo Benton - what ever happened to him?

Let me connect the dots for you guys.

DLo started looking around last summer. It got quiet once school started and he was getting his grades right. One of his closest confidants is the receiver's coach at BHS. The coach played collegiately at Tulane, where his offensive coordinator was none other than Michigan coach Rich Rodriguez. This coach still keeps in contact with Coach Rodriguez. He is a big reason Michigan made headway in Bastrop.

I don't know if there is genuine interest in Michigan from DLo, but the connection is there, and Michigan does run an offense that a playbook challenged guy like DLo will be familiar with. Keep in mind there MIGHT be more playing time available for him at Michigan than LSU.

Either way, if he sees the field in year one, don't expect anymore than two years of him. He doesn't come from money and he'll already be 3 years out of high school this summer.

    The operative word is MIGHT.

I don't know of a team in which the WR position is more wide open than LSU right now. Even Toliver hasn't guaranteed himself a starting spot, although he is definitely ahead of the others.

The position is wide open at LSU but the potential competition at the position is off the charts, ESPECIALLY if Randle and/or Kelly commit. Wide open doesn't tell the competition story. The same can't be said for Michigan. Rodriguez is still trying to get his style of players for his system.

    Ok, so let's see.

He'll bolt for Michigan, shocking all LSU fans and coaches.

He'll get some early PT in a horrid offense for 2 seasons in which he has very limited success.

He bolts for the NFL where he is an undrafted free agent and makes NFL minimum if he's lucky.

Yep, sounds like a success story in the making.

Benton has been all LSU, there is no concrete reason to think otherwise. Im sure the coaches know. The only problem is to get him on campus and on the field. I was more excited about Benton than Toliver two years ago. This kid has serious talent. Sure LSU has a lot of competition, but the fact is none have proven anything. Being a blue chip means nothing until you prove it on the field. Look at the Mitchells, both were highly regarded coming out. Same with Dixon. Benton has a great situation here at LSU.

As of tis morning, the LSU staff does not expect him to make the trip to Auburn. More news will be out shortly if he actually made it or not.

I asked Reuben Randle's dad the other day what was the story on Benton and he told me that he was going to LSU. Guess we'll have to wait and see but I thought that was rather encouraging.

It would be a surprise to see him end up somewhere else, regardless of the reason. I can understand a commit changing his mind but, when this university has patiently waited for him to qualify, while reserving a scholarship for two years, for him to go elsewhere is a huge slap in the face. I am sure the coaches are less than thrilled that he would even entertain another school.

Re: DeAngelo Benton - what ever happened to him?

Keep in mind, I never said he would bolt for Michigan.

What you guys don't know is that once upon a time he was unhappy with the situation. He had an opportunity to do something else. HE DIDN'T.

Don't get worked up over nothing. Like I said to bhelms, I was connecting the Michigan dots. THAT'S ALL.

Now you've got the kid failing in the NFL just because an opportunity was there that he MAY have thought about taking. GEEZ!

Look, people get unhappy at schools, on jobs, and everywhere else all the time. IF he did go elsewhere, it would be no worse than a kid who comes, doesn't like it, then doesn't give it his all, thereby cheating the university. I personally think coming to the university, then not performing because you're unhappy is much worse than not coming at all. THAT is truly a wasted scholly.

For all intents and purposes, I think he ends up at LSU where he always said he wanted to go.

Re: DeAngelo Benton - what ever happened to him?

So are you saying that for the last two years, LSU has only had 84 scholarshipped players because they had one reserved for a kid who hasn't even enrolled yet? Are you sure "reserved" are the right words here?

    I could've sworn a scholly isn't used until a kid enrolls...
