I like Matt Flynn a lot. He's tough as nails, has the ability to run and throw, and has mostly come through in the clutch this year. Still, he has thrown interceptions in 7 straight games. And most of them were pretty ugly ones that, as a senior, he should never have thrown. If I were an opposing defensive coach, I'd bring the heat on Matt early and often, not let him get into any kind of rhythm, and bet that he would throw me several picks. So far this year the Tigers have gotten away with Matt's errors. Can LSU afford to keeping tossing it to the other side, though? Maybe against Ole Miss. Perhaps against Arkansas. But I fear not against Tennessee, Georgia, Oregon, West Virginia, Oklahoma, Missouri or Kansas.
I think our defense can handle Matt turning the ball over, but you are right about him throwing to many picks. I think he tries to make too many things happen instead of making the little plays. It doesnt help that he doesnt receive any blocking. Our o-line needs help.:geauxtige
Our O-line doesn't block at all on pass protection? Wow, I have no idea how Flynn has time and time again been able to complete beautifully thrown long passes this season. How does he do it with 2 or 3 defensive lineman constantly trying to pull him down while he throws? Flynn you are a miracle worker.
I'm really tired myself of these MF int threads. Btw I wasn't aware that LSU had seven games left in the season. My schedule doesn't have us playing Tenn, Oregon, WV, OK, Missouri or Kansas on it? MF is playing his first year as a starter but it seems to me that if you are going to blame him for the errors you should also give him credit for the winning throw against Auburn as well. Yes, I would love it if we could cut down on turnovers but sometimes that happen and some of those were due to injury as well. Matt Maulk average an Int a game during the :crystal: year. I am not worried about Flynn throwing (more) picks. Considering all the good passes that he has made, including the cluster of dropped passes by the receivers when he was right on the money with the pass, I think he has done alright. The picks, though painful and ugly at times, where all part of the learning process with game experience and growth. I am confident he will learn to settle down and not try to force the ball. :crystal:
All things considered not ALL interceptions were totally the fault of MF. Of all the int's how many were blown routes, tip int, missed timing? I do not know, but I do know they were not All thrown directly to a defender. I agree with the point that this is his first year as a starter, and by the way wasn’t too bad off starting or playing in place of JR. Typically those int's thrown were in the first half with a tiny percentage in the second half. Only one man throws the ball, it takes a team to catch it!
MF has made some bad passing decisions in the last 2 games. However all this seems to occur in the first half and early series. He then regroups and is money the rest of the game. If he can just settle down and make good decisions at the start, he will be fine. That is why I think it is important to get the running game going early and often. I know Crowton is biased to the throwing game, but I think it would do the team and MF a lot of good if they ran more in the first half. This would hopefully open up the passing game. Now the last 2 games, the WR's haven't been dropping balls, but it has been Flynn making the bad decisions. Now earlier in the season the WR's were butterfingers and it really hurt Flynn's numbers and is INT's weren't that bad in terms of numbers.
Yes, his interceptions generally just look really bad. I worry that it is mid November of his senior season and he still makes some really bad throws. But I think our receivers need to also share some of the responsibility of going after the ball. If the pass is not right on the money (which all are not from any QB), they must turn into a defender.
Well said! How many points this season given for int's? Int's happen but the key is having a great "D" that will not let those turn into points. :geaux:
