If Newton gets hurt, the capabilities of Auburn's offense will diminish considerably. We have a couple of solid backups (Trotter, Mosley) that can run Malzahn's scheme, however, a defense as aggressive as LSU's would be able to pin thier ears back against lesser talent than Newton. Trotter can throw the rock and is excellent with the short and intermediate routes. The stretch routes?... not so much. But make no mistake about it ..... Newton makes everyone around him better and the respect he garners allows others to make plays in man-coverage. Without him, I believe we would be toast.
Guys named Dyer and McCalebb are exceptional and under the radar due to Newton's play. Even Mario Fannin is very solid in reserve. it's a 3 headed monster running attack as opposed to the Ridley show for LSU. Newton is averaging over 10 yards per pass attempt, which would be astounding even for a protoypical pro style QB. Compare that to Jefferson, who averages only 5 yards per attempt, and Lee who averages a nice 8 yards per attempt. So please don't sleep on their passing game. 13 TDs against only 5 Interceptions shows he can protect the ball but can also make big plays. I would say the best part of the Auburn passing game is their big play ability. They have 2 receivers who average more than 18 yards per catch. Darvin Adams, their #1 go to guy and Emory Blake who has come up big at crucial times with long pass plays, usually for touchdowns.
I think if they only score 17, it will be because our offense hasn't put the defense in bad situations and is able to move the ball. In that case, I think yes, we can score 20+.
And that's obviously a big injury for you guys. He's been the biggest workhorse out of the 3. I do notice, other than Fannin, you guys do not throw to the backs coming out of the backfield.
I wouldn't write AU's defense off based in the Arkansas game alone, that day, Arkansas' offense would have torched many a defense- they were on fire. That back up QB never missed a beat. He was 25 of 34 with over 300 yards passing and he's a soph.
It's that other little dude we need to keep an eye on, McCaleb or whatever his name is, that dude is quick.
I watched the Miss. St. v. Auburn, and I believe that Miss. St. did a better job of limiting the rest of the team rather than Newton. Newton played very well that game, however the rest of the playmakers were held relatively quiet. I don't think anyone in the country can stop Cam Newton, but if we let him be the only weapon, I think we can suppress this offense. Look at the UK game, Newton had 4 TDs, but they limited the other playmakers form significant impact. I'm not sold on Dyer, so even though he's out, I'm more worried about Fannin and McCalebb. These guys are more big play threats which is what gets to our D more than grinding-out backs. Also, a key playmaker to watch on Auburn is Nick Fairley(I believe that's him). Very disruptive DL that can cause chaos in the backfield. Also, the opponent is slipping my mind right now, but there was a game where Dyer lost two fumbles, and this put Auburn in a tough position. If we can force a few turnovers and limit our own, we will be in GREAT position.
